Discover Verona
Verona is a UNESCO-listed city where Roman ruins, art, and great food all come together in one beautiful, easy-to-explore place. You can wander past cafés, artisan shops and busy markets as you make your way through the streets.
Food and wine are a big part of the fun here, with local trattorie, the cosy family-run restaurants you find all over Italy, serving much-loved local wines such as Valpolicella and Amarone and whatever is in season. Gelaterie and bakeries are dotted around too, perfect for a sweet stop between sights.
Our Walking Specialists can tailor your trip to the dates, durations and hotels that suit you.
Sample Verona city break itinerary
- Start your morning at the Roman Arena, one of the best-preserved amphitheatres in Italy. Arrive early to wander its arches and imagine the crowds that once filled the stands. The arena still hosts concerts and operas. If you plan on seeing a show we'd recommend booking your tickets in advance.
- Nearby is the Museo Lapidario Maggeiano, one of Europe’s oldest public museums. Inside, you’ll find Greek, Etruscan, Roman, ancient Veneto and Arabic works.
- From there, stroll through Verona’s elegant piazzas. Piazza Bra opens up beside the Arena, lined with cafés and grand façades, while Piazza delle Erbe buzzes with market stalls, frescoed buildings and a lively energy - perfect for a mid-morning coffee or gelato stop.
- For some of the best views in the city, head up to Torre dei Lamberti. At 84m high, it offers panoramic views across Verona’s rooftops and the River Adige.
- Spend your afternoon exploring the Old Town’s cobbled lanes, browsing boutiques and soaking up the city’s easy charm. Finish your day at Castelvecchio, a striking medieval castle that’s now home to Verona’s Civic Museum. Continue along the river to Basilica di San Zeno: a beautiful, Romanesque church dedicated to the city’s patron saints.
- Start in Piazza Bra, then follow the medieval walls towards Via Pallone and Juliet’s Tomb. Here, you’ll find the Museum of Frescoes, set inside a former 15th-century monastery. It’s home to medieval and Renaissance frescoes, plus the tomb is said to have held Juliet’s body.
- Head to the Roman Theatre and Archaeological Museum, then take the funicular up to Castel San Pietro. The reward? One of Verona’s best views over the rooftops, river and historic centre.
- Follow the River Adige past Santo Stefano and San Giorgio in Braida, home to works by Tintoretto and Veronese. Cross Ponte Pietra, Verona’s oldest bridge, dating back to the 1st century BC. It’s a proper pause-and-take-a-photo moment.
- Back in the historic centre, visit Santa Anastasia, a striking Gothic Basilica known for Pisanello’s St George and the Princess.
- End at Verona Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. Don’t miss the Biblioteca Capitolare, one of the world’s oldest working libraries, where Dante is said to have studied.
