What to see on a Milan holiday

You could explore the 19th-century Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the oldest shopping arcade in the world. Or people-watch from one of the ristorantes that frame Piazza del Duomo. Milan’s aperitivo scene is legendary, with bars as stylish as the fashionistas who lounge in them. If it’s art you’re after, head for Sforza Castle and its collection of Renaissance masterpieces. Another kind of art awaits you at Teatro alla Scala – a theatre with a programme of Verdi, Puccini and Rossini.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

  • Duomo di Milano: The central focus of the city is its beautiful gothic Duomo. Enjoy it from the outside or head in to see the intricate stained glass windows and venture up on to the roof - the views of Milan from here are amazing.
  • Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper: You'll find this work of art in the UNESCO awarded Santa Maria delle Grazi. See it for yourself on a short guided tour, booking in advance is a must.
  • Galleria Emmanuele II: Another of Milan’s most recognizable landmarks. It opened in 1867 and has stood the test of time, making it one of the oldest of its kind. Today it’s packed with designer shops from Gucci to Versace, traditional cafes and an urban street market showcasing the freshest Italian ingredients.
  • The Highline - Galleria Emmanuele II: There's a highline walkway on the roof of the Galleria Emmanuele II that links the Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala. It’s a unique way to see the city from above, with views of the Duomo’s spires.
  • Teatro alla Scala: La Scala has hosted operas for over 200 years from some of the best-known musicians and composers in Italy. The best way to experience the theatre is by attending a performance but if you just want to soak up its historical splendour, you can book up a visit to the theatre and the museum throughout the year.
  • Sforza Castle: This former fortress has been transformed into a cultural hub with seven museums to explore. Art lovers can marvel at Michelangelo’s Rondanini Pietà, which is now housed in the Castles Ospedale Spagnolo (Spanish Hospital).
  • The Navigli District: The charming neighbourhood of Navigli is full of hidden gems including historic courtyards, small independent galleries, vintage furniture shops and authentic restaurants.
  • Cimitero Monumentale: This beautiful cemetery acts as an open-air museum. It’s famed for its beautifully decorated tombs and leading figures and famous families from Milan are buried here, including author Alessandro Manzoni, conductor Arturo Toscanini and poet, artist and founder of the futurist movement Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

Food & drink

Milan's food scene has really come into its own in the last few years thanks to new and exciting restaurants popping up all the time. You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out. Make sure you try some of the city's specialties. Risotto alla Milanese uses rice grown in the Po Valley and Cotoletta all Milanese is a tasty veal cutlet in a thin layer of breadcrumbs. Try the local gorgonzola too - this is where it orginates from.
