Ratings/reviewsClick for full ratings

The beautiful Hotel Sassi is located in the region of Basilicata in the Sasso Barisano district, just a short walk from the main square in the centre of Matera. In the heart of Sassi di Matera, the ancient caved region, you’ll find yourself amidst the historical structures. The panoramic terraces offer stunning views of Matera's Cathedral and the surrounding valleys. The hotel prides itself as the first hotel in the Sassi, as it was established in 1996. It puts you in a prime pedestrianised location, just steps away from the town’s most famous attractions, such as the hundreds of rock churches with their beautiful frescoes.

In the summer months watch the rare lesser kestrel, that nest on the rooftops, put on a beautiful performance as they circle above. Enjoy this from the comfort of the balcony of your room or on the beautiful cobbled terraces whilst enjoying a local wine from the hotels bar. Relax after a day of exploring in your very own cave dwelling. The bedrooms and living space each have their own unique feel, with some carved out into the rocks whilst others perch on top overlooking the enchanting city.

Basilicata

Basilicata is a region steeped in history. The regional capital Matera is one of the world’s oldest cities, dating back to the Preolithic era. The Sassi district of Matera, with its cave dwellings, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been awarded 2019 European Capital of Culture, making it the perfect time to visit this enchanting area. Basilicata boasts stunning scenery that ranges from the snow-capped peaks and ancient forests of the Pollino National Park to the white sandy beaches and rocky bays of its two dramatic coastlines. Set in the far south of Italy, neighbouring Puglia to its east, it is a tranquil and quiet part of the country that still retains an undiscovered feel. Greek, French, Spanish and Arabian invasions have influenced these lands and the regional cuisine. Its strong agricultural traditions and delicious rustic ingredients, play a big part in local cooking – recorded as the first place in Italy to produce fresh pasta. This is a delicacy that should not be missed during your stay.

Inghams operate a telephone Rep service in Basilicata.
