Walking holidays in Italy

Holidays in Italy will leave you a little more in love with the landscape and wanting to come back for more. Italy is a country full of dramatic scenery, great works of art, fabulous food and a captivating history. Will you spend your summer holiday in the dreamy rolling vineyards and sunflowers of Tuscany, the picture-perfect coastline of Liguria, the picturesque shores of Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, or walking along the well-trodden mountain paths of the Dolomites? Italy walking holidays are an enchanting mix of coastal trails, lakeside meanders and mountain tracks mixed with splashes of history and refreshing dips in the lakes or sea.

Walking trails in Italy are as diverse as they are stunning. The Dolomites is the place to head for challenging mountain trails or a chance to tackle the Alta Via no.1, walking all the way to the foot of Monte Bianco. Or, for a gentler leg stretch, Lake Garda has flat lakeside walking as well as challenging mountain trails.

Italy’s incredible history, from the ancient Greeks and Romans to Medieval castles and Renaissance art, is woven into the landscape at every turn. Tuscanyalone has seven World Heritage Sites and dozens of castles, some of which now produce their own wine (always a good reason to visit!).

From paddle-boarding in Riva to wine tasting in Bardolino or boat rides in Liguria to e-biking in the Dolomites, there's no shortage of things to do in Italy. If water sports is up your street, the North of Lake Garda and Lake Ledro are fantastic places to stay, with motor-boat free Lake Ledro offering relaxed days paddling across the water, or Riva and its more fast paced water sports scene. Head to Liguria for the water-based lifestyle, swim, relax on boats and more on the glistening Italian Riviera. If you're looking to keep your feet on the ground or prefer travelling along on two wheels, head to our mountainous resorts. Canazei in the Dolomites is a heaven for cyclists, twist and turn along mountain roads, walk through Selva's striking panoramas or stroll past South Tyrolean vineyards in Merano.

With a landscape that is carpeted in olive groves, vineyards, and citrus trees you won't have to walk far to find a trattoria serving great local dishes or a fabulous food or wine festival in full swing. In Liguria, fresh seafood dishes are the order of the day, along with mozzarella and pesto in abundance, washed down with Limoncello.

If you have an active family, with a passion for the outdoors lifestyle teenagers will love our mountain resorts with plenty of things to do to get their adrenaline pumping, with zip-lining, hiking, mini-golf, and even mountain biking to try out. Alternatively, head to the lakes; Riva in Lake Garda is a favourite spot for windsurfing, canoeing and sailing aficionados, or Garda and Bardolino in the South of the Lake which are great jumping off points for nearby waterparks and theme parks.
