The best thing about Excelsior Palace hotel is its location - you’ll find yourself about fifty metres from Taormina's pedestrianised main street, Corso Umberto, and on the edge of a cliff so you get amazing sea views. If you can, upgrade to an Elegance Room so you get to wake up to sea views each morning. The rooms are in keeping with the historic hotel building and have an old-world charm. A stepped path leads down through terraced gardens to the pool. From here there are fantastic views of the Taormina coastline. When you’re not exploring, this is the perfect spot to relax with a good book.

Taormina’s a really vibrant place to visit with lots of shops, beautiful old churches and the ancient Greek Theatre. There are lots of nice restaurants and cafés close to the hotel and more seafood places in Taormina Mare - the gondola is just a short stroll away. The hotel has a nice bar area with comfy sofas where you can have a nightcap before bed.

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour by private car from Catania airport.

It's easy to understand why Taormina is one of Sicily's most popular resorts. It's position on the edge of the island means you get incredible views over the sea towards Mount Etna. Spend your days strolling through the historic streets, grabbing a coffee on a sea-view terrace or heading down for a day at the beach in Taormina Mare.

What to see on a holiday to Taormina

There's a lot of history to unpack here. The Greek Theatre is the town's most-known attraction - it also has some of the best Mount Etna views so bring your camera along. If you time your visit with the Taormina Film Festival you can even take in a show here. Just walking through the town is a great way to take in the sights. Head down Corso Umberto for the shops and restaurants, or take the cable car down to Taormina Mare and spend some time on Isola Bella.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

Taormina has some of the most stunning architecture Europe has to offer with the Teatro Greco ruins, Corso Umberto and the Piazza Duomo, which dates back to the 13th century. The pedestrianised Corso Umberto (named for the King of Italy) is home to a fantastic variety of shops, restaurants, cafés and enoteca. Be sure to make a stop at the famed 'Gelatomania', one of the oldest ice cream shops in Taormina with over 50 flavours of gelato to choose from.

Head outside the town and take a trip to Mount Etna. Head to the summit for fantastic island views or stick to the foothills and discover quiant towns and a good vineyard scene.

Food & drink

It's all about Sicily's famous street food in Taormina. There's nothing better than grabbing a snack to eat as you walk around the town. Our favourite is arancini (fried rice balls) and canoli (a sweet ricotta-filled pastry). Olive oil is big business here so ask for a few varieties to dip your bread into while you wait for your main course. You might even find yourself bringing a bottle or two home! We love the local Sicilian wine and the best way to enjoy a glass is on a sea-view terrace. Our favourite is the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo - the views of Mount Etna are unbeatable.

Enjoy a buffet breakfast each morning from 7.30am - 10am with home-made pastries, fresh bread, cereals, fruit and yoghurt.

In the evenings you can choose from the à la carte menu in the main restaurant (payable locally) - the choice here is excellent with Sicilian, Italian and international cuisine all made with seasonal local products. The wine list is great too.

Bar Etna has a panoramic terrace with amazing views. It's a nice place to head at sunset to enjoy a drink.
