Discover Merano

  • Sip local wines in centuries-old vineyards overlooking the mountains
  • Longer cycling season, thanks to a milder climate
  • Spend warm summer evenings enjoying live music in the elegant Kursaal concert hall

On the edge of the Dolomites in South Tyrol, Merano pairs alpine scenery with a surprisingly Mediterranean feel. It's easy to see why Merano has been a favourite holiday destination for centuries. Once a fashionable summer retreat for Europe's elite, the town still wears its history proudly, with elegant hotels, grand architecture and beautifully maintained gardens.

In summer, colourful wildflowers blanket the hillsides, palm trees line the promenades and vineyard-covered slopes stretch towards the peaks beyond. Cycle paths weave through vineyards and orchards while other scenic rides connect charming villages and castles and gardens. Or simply settle into a sunny café terrace, order a glass of local wine and watch the world go by.

Known for its thermal springs and spa culture, Merano invites you to slow down and savour the relaxed pace of life. Yet the dramatic heart of the Dolomites is never far away, with Selva and the striking Sella mountains just over an hour's drive away via Bolzano, making it easy to swap vineyard views for some of Italy's most spectacular mountain scenery – why not join a guided mountain experience?

More about Merano

Things to do in Merano

Merano's thermal baths are the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day of walking in the mountains. At the spas you'll find everything from Finish saunas to steam rooms, plus 25 pools, each unique in it's own way. Be sure to make use of the outdoor pools, some of which have wonderful mountain views- dreamy!

In the summer Merano's full of live music concerts and entertainment, which liven up the streets. There's a programme of classical, traditional, pop, jazz and more taking places throughout the sunny months, in some fantastic locations. Many concerts are held al fresco in the Trauttmansdorff Botanical Gardens, or you may stumble across musicians in the main square. For a more glamorous concert, why not book one at the Kursaal, Merano's beautiful main concert hall and treat yourself to a glass of local sparkling wine to enjoy before the concert.

This region is well known for its wine thanks to its Mediterranean climate. Orchards and vineyards line the mountains and stretch down to the town. We recommend visiting Castel Rametz, a wine museum where you can take a guided walk around the ancient Roman wine cellar and try the delicious wine.

Cycling is a great way to see the area. Dedicated bike paths make it easy for families to head out exploring. Be sure to take your camera to capture the amazing scenery as you go.

Discover the spectacular Trauttmansdorff Gardens, where 12 hectares are filled with plants and flowers from around the world across more than 80 garden landscapes. They’re easy to reach from Merano on foot via Sissi’s Path, making the journey part of the experience.

The path follows in the footsteps of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi, who spent summers at Trauttmansdorff Castle and enjoyed long walks through the surrounding countryside. The 3.2 kilometre route is divided into 11 stages, each with its own story, winding from the castle down towards the gardens. Look out for the statue of Sissi along the way, a fitting tribute to the empress who gave the path its name.
