Discover adventure in Chamonix
With the Mont Blanc towering over the town, it’s no wonder Chamonix is a haven for walkers. With spruce forests, stunning glaciers and rocky peaks with diverse walking trails to suit different abilities, Chamonix makes for a fantastic walking destination. With a lively town centre and plenty of activities on offer, it’s often referred to as the adventure capital of Europe.
Our top tips for your time in Chamonix:
- You can't visit Chamonix without taking a trip on the Aiguille du Midi cable car (buy your tickets in advance). The cable car will whisk you up into the Mont Blanc Massif to the Aiguille du Midi peak viewpoint where you can see snow-covered peaks and spectacular scenery.
- The Montenvers train is an excellent way to get into the mountains. This cog train climbs above Chamonix until you reach the Mer de Glace glacier - one of Europe's largest glaciers.
- For a relaxed pace, discover the shops of Chamonix. Enjoy lunch at one of the many cafés or restaurants then indulge on one of the fabulous ice cream parlours or patisseries, most with delicious macaroons on offer.

Visit the charming town of Zermatt
The Matterhorn town of Zermatt has an abundance of walking trails on offer - there's nearly 400 kilometres of marked trails with plenty of mountain lifts and trains - perfect for reaching great walks and the best viewpoints of the Matterhorn. The town offers plenty of Swiss charm with car-free streets and traditional chalets.
Our top tips for your time in Zermatt:
- For the best views of the Matterhorn, a journey on the Gornergrat railway is a must. Once you’re at the top you can even see the Matterhorn reflected in the Riffelsee lake on a clear day. This area also has some lovely walking trails to discover, too.
- Wanting to pop over to Italy? The new Matterhorn Alpine Crossing makes that possible. Journey high into the mountains and find the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Up here you can see the ice palace, admire the amazing views, or, hop on the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing and say hello (or ciao) to Italy.
- For those seeking out adventure, then you’ll find plenty on offer in Zermatt. Hire mountain bikes, or, for the brave, try some via feratta.

Extend your multi-centre to the Swiss village of Grindelwald (optional)
There is also the option to extend your multi-centre holiday and journey to Grindelwald. This Swiss village sits beneath the Eiger mountain and is often referred to as a gateway to the Jungfrau region. The Jungfrau region has around 500 kilometres of walking trails to explore that offer something for all abilities, plus there's lots of sightseeing to do in the local area and plenty of opportunity for adventure.
Our top tips for your time in Grindelwald:
- A visit the Jungfraujoch is a must-do with views that stretch over the Aletsch Glacier - the longest glacier in Europe. Visit the ice palace to view the glacier from within. At the top there's also restaurants, Lindt chocolate shop, viewpoints and activities on the snow.
- For an adrenalin rush, Grindelwald First is the place to head to. Start with the impressive Cliff Walk which juts out from the cliff face with views across the valley. Then, you can choose between ziplines, mountain carts or trotti-bikes to make your way down the mountain.
- Visit the Glacier Gorge for an impressive insight into the power of water. Incredible rock formations have been carved over thousands of years, by the fast-flowing glacial meltwater that gushes through the canyon.
