Discover Ascona

Voted the 'Swiss village of the year' in 2025, Ascona is a true jewel located on the shores of Lake Maggiore. This former fishing village perfectly blends tradition and innovation - while serving up some seriously stunning views. Picture this: you're walking down winding alleys or along the shoreline of the crystal waters. Colourful painted houses line either side of the streets as palm trees sway overhead against a backdrop of sweeping mountains. Pretty spectacular, right?

The Mediterranean vibe extends further than the historical architecture and outdoor dining. Thanks to the Ticino region's climate, Ascona enjoys warmer weather compared to the rest of Switzerland. Spend your days strolling through the lush gardens, exploring the charming old town's art galleries and quiet piazzas or go further afield and visit the neighbouring towns of Locarno and Brissago.

From high-thrill paragliding to sunny afternoons on the golf course, Ascona is a summer destination built for every speed. Gear up for action on the waves with some water sports, or simply let the stone paths within the resort lead you wherever they choose. Best of all, the local food and drink scene is just as exceptional as the views. The Ticino region combines Swiss quality with the best of Italian cuisine. Stop for lunch and try some of the fresh catches from the lake, or relax by the water for dinner with a creamy risotto. Paired with a glass of local Merlot wine, it doesn't get much better than this. And of course, you have to top it off with a walk along the waterfront, a gelato in hand.

Things to do in Ascona

Experience the best of Ascona's scenery on foot, from palm trees to glaciers. The hiking network around Ascona and Lake Maggiore includes more than 1,400kms of trails, from winding waterfront strolls to summiting the mountains through the valleys of the Locarno and Gambarogno region. You can do as little or as much as you like - take a day trip up to Monte Gambarogno to admire the aerial views of Lake Maggiore or follow the stone paths through a variety of rural villages to find hidden old towns, nature reserves, museums and ancient churches. No matter your pace, you're guaranteed unbeatable views.

Instead of exploring on two feet, why not explore on two wheels? Throughout the Ascona and Locarno region, you'll find a wide selection of cycle trails to suit a variety of tastes. Get your adrenaline pumping with some mountain biking on the official SwitzerlandMobility trails, join an E-bike racing tour or take your time appreciating the sights as you cycle effortlessly along the cycle paths in the village.

Brione Verzasca - Known for its iconic bouldering and popular with climbers all over the world, Brione Verzasca has over 700 routes ranging from 3 to 8c, making it perfect for all abilities.

Water Sports Ascona Switzerland(© Ascona Locarno Tourism Foto Alessio Pizzicannella)

Is sunbathing on the shoreline too boring for you? Experience Lake Maggiore first-hand and spend some time on its crystal-clear waters. There is a wide range of water sports for you to try on the lake and rivers. Soak up the sun while sailing, explore what's under the waves on a diving trip or test out your skills on some waterskis or a wakeboard. Whether you want something fast-paced and adrenaline-fuelled, or a slow, more relaxed experience, there's something for everyone.

If you're looking for pure adrenaline, look no further.

This 220m/721ft high dam of the Verzasca Valley isn't just famous for being one of the highest dams in Europe - it's also the setting for the opening scene of the James Bond movie GoldenEye , starring Pierce Brosnan. The activity can be extended to include a visit to a historic stone village and the Romanesque bridge at Lavertezzo, where you can enjoy the clear waters of the river Verzasca with a cocktail in hand.

It's argued that Bond's jump is one of the best stunts in film history - are you brave enough to try it yourself?

Paragliding Ascona Switzerland(© Ascona Locarno Tourism Foto Alessio Pizzicannella)

A paragliding flight is an unforgettable experience, and surrounded by views of the lake and mountains, you couldn't ask for more. Ascona-Locarno is the most practical and suitable place for paragliding in Ticino. The exposure of the sun on the mountains creates a thermal lift that starts directly after take-off in Cimetta. And with the high altitude, you can glide over the city and along the shimmering waters of Lake Maggiore. Don't forget to pack a swimsuit, as you'll land on the sandy shores of the Maggia River, so there's always time for a swim after.
