The Minareto is located in the beautiful Plemmirio Marine Reserve. It's a unique position at the tip of a promontory that overlooks Latomie Bay and the historic centre of Syracuse. You can get to the centre by car or shuttle (at set times), but the hotel has it’s own private boat service (payable locally) if you fancy hoping across the water to explore the city.

There’s loads to see and do in the area and the hotel has range of activities that you can book and pay for locally like bike tours, yoga classes, snorkelling, fishing and excursions to Ortigia, Taormina and Mount Etna. Plus wine and food experiences like cooking classes and street food tours. Just chat to the friendly staff here, they’ll have some great recommendations for you.

On one side of the resort you’ll find the Minareto’s private beach - a sandy bay with crystal clear waters, equipped with sun loungers and parasols. On the other side, which is rockier, there’s a solarium on the cliffs. We love listening the soothing sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks from up here. If you prefer a fresh water dip, head to the centre of the resort where there’s a pool. In the evening the terrace comes into its own, Out here you can relax in one of the wooden huts with a drink from the bar or hop in the whirlpool and watch as the sun goes down over the water.

The comfortable rooms are tastefully finished in a sophisticated style. Upgrade to a superior sea view room to make the most of the hotel’s spectacular location. They’re passionate about food here so whether you’re just staying for breakfast or have opted for half board, you’re in for a treat. It’s all made fresh, using local ingredients from Sicily.

Syracuse

The city of Syracuse under the ancient Greeks was the most important city in the western world. Today, it's one of our favourite places to stay in Sicily. Its collection of monuments including Greek theatre and the island of Ortigia are impressive. It's a bit quieter than Taormina too, so it's a fantastic choice if you're looking for a more authentic stay.

What to see on a Syracuse holiday

The old town of Ortigia is a wonderful place to explore. It's pedestrianised so you can stroll through the cobbled street, stop off in the boutique shops and admire the baroque architecture. The city's crowning glory is the white marble Duomo - we love having a coffee in the piazza in front of it, especially at sunset when the colours of the building soften.

The nearby towns of the Val di Noto; Ragusa, Scicli, Modica and Noto together form a UNESCO World Heritage site, listed for its flamboyant baroque architecture. We recommend hiring a car and heading out to explore them all.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

Put on some comfy shoes and head straight into the old town of Ortigia. It's linked to the mainland by bridges and you can start off by walking around the island, admiring sea views as you go. The centre is a maze of cobbled streets with charming shops and hidden restaurants. There's plenty of locals out and about, with much less of a tourist crowd than Taormina making it feel very authentic. History buffs should head for the Greek Theatre and the impressive white-marble Duomo.

We recommend exploring further afield too, the south east of Sicily has some incredibly picturesque towns. Noto, Ragusa and Scicli are UNESCO protected and perfect examples of baroque architecture. There's lots of coastline to explore too with some great white-sand beaches.

Food & drink

There's a daily food market in Ortigia with all sorts of delicious local produce. It's wonderful to walk through here in the morning, watching the locals shop for their dinner. When you get hungry, pull up a chair amongst the stalls for lunch.

The restaurants in Ortigia are very authentic with plenty of Sicilian specialties to try. They're often hidden down little alleyways with outside tables for al fresco dining next to the baroque buildings.
