The Arathena Rocks Hotel’s in the quiet Schisò district of Giardini Naxos, positioned right on the coast. Local shops, bars and the public beach are a short stroll away and it’s about six kilometres from the famous hilltop town of Taormina, which can be reached by bus from the end of the lane.

Staying here you get a real feel for the local culture and a sense of the region's history – it’s a traditional Sicilian style hotel, decorated with bass reliefs, sculptures, hand painted doors and beautifully tiled floors, which all take influence from the Taormina coast. The rooms are simple yet elegant and provide a fresh cool space to relax and unwind. They all have balconies, but we’d recommend upgrading to a superior room to make the most of the spectacular sea views.

The garden leads right onto the rocky volcanic coastline. There’s plenty of sun loungers dotted around so it’s easy to find a quiet spot to enjoy views of the turquoise water in the bay – on a clear day you’ll see Mount Etna too. The large saltwater pool is the perfect temperature to cool off from the Sicilian sun, but if you prefer a dip in the sea, there’s direct access to the water via steps attached to the volcanic rocks.

In the evening head to the terrace at the American bar for aperitivo’s and cocktails – you can’t beat the views from here. The staff here are really helpful and friendly, so get chatting and tap into their knowledge of the area. You’ll be out exploring like a local in no time!

It's easy to understand why Taormina is one of Sicily's most popular resorts. It's position on the edge of the island means you get incredible views over the sea towards Mount Etna. Spend your days strolling through the historic streets, grabbing a coffee on a sea-view terrace or heading down for a day at the beach in Taormina Mare.

What to see on a holiday to Taormina

There's a lot of history to unpack here. The Greek Theatre is the town's most-known attraction - it also has some of the best Mount Etna views so bring your camera along. If you time your visit with the Taormina Film Festival you can even take in a show here. Just walking through the town is a great way to take in the sights. Head down Corso Umberto for the shops and restaurants, or take the cable car down to Taormina Mare and spend some time on Isola Bella.
