The views across the Bay of Taormina from Hotel Ariston are amazing – grab a drink from the pool bar and enjoy! The hotel's close to the centre of Taormina, built into the hillside of Sicily's Ionian coast. It’s located at the foot of Taormina's Ancient Greek Theatre, where there’s often music events during the summer. It’s easy to walk down to the coast and Taormina Mare, but it’s even easier to take the nearby cable car. We recommend wandering across to the beautiful Isola Bella.

The hotel's La Terraza Restaurant is open throughout the summer. We love having dinner up here on the ‘sky terrace’. The food is delicious, mainly traditional Sicilian dishes, often with a backdrop of live piano music. You could spend hours and hours relaxing on the terraces that surround the pool. There are plenty of loungers and parasols. Nice shady spots are cast by the trees in the surrounding gardens and the pool bar is nearby. The bartender makes a mean Mojito with freshly picked mint from the garden.

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour 5 mins by private car from Catania airport.

Taormina

It's easy to understand why Taormina is one of Sicily's most popular resorts. It's position on the edge of the island means you get incredible views over the sea towards Mount Etna. Spend your days strolling through the historic streets, grabbing a coffee on a sea-view terrace or heading down for a day at the beach in Taormina Mare.

What to see on a holiday to Taormina

There's a lot of history to unpack here. The Greek Theatre is the town's most-known attraction - it also has some of the best Mount Etna views so bring your camera along. If you time your visit with the Taormina Film Festival you can even take in a show here. Just walking through the town is a great way to take in the sights. Head down Corso Umberto for the shops and restaurants, or take the cable car down to Taormina Mare and spend some time on Isola Bella.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

Taormina has some of the most stunning architecture Europe has to offer with the Teatro Greco ruins, Corso Umberto and the Piazza Duomo, which dates back to the 13th century. The pedestrianised Corso Umberto (named for the King of Italy) is home to a fantastic variety of shops, restaurants, cafés and enoteca. Be sure to make a stop at the famed 'Gelatomania', one of the oldest ice cream shops in Taormina with over 50 flavours of gelato to choose from.

Head outside the town and take a trip to Mount Etna. Head to the summit for fantastic island views or stick to the foothills and discover quiant towns and a good vineyard scene.

Food & drink

It's all about Sicily's famous street food in Taormina. There's nothing better than grabbing a snack to eat as you walk around the town. Our favourite is arancini (fried rice balls) and canoli (a sweet ricotta-filled pastry). Olive oil is big business here so ask for a few varieties to dip your bread into while you wait for your main course. You might even find yourself bringing a bottle or two home! We love the local Sicilian wine and the best way to enjoy a glass is on a sea-view terrace. Our favourite is the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo - the views of Mount Etna are unbeatable.
