Pescasseroli lies in a stunning wide plain amid a mountainous landscape of untouched natural beauty in the heart of the National Park of Abruzzo, one of Italy's most ancient natural parks, and still a model for a controlled development in protected areas. Here the park’s mascot, the Marsican brown bear, still survives. The unspoilt environment also supports wolves, chamois deer and golden eagle. In the past, Pescasseroli was an agricultural centre and shepherds would set out with their flock on their annual pilgrimage to new pastures. These old tracks now form the basis of a network of walking paths through forests and along hillsides to dramatic viewpoints. The little town is still a centre of leatherwork, woodcarving and wrought iron and is a good base for a fascinating range of excursions.
Rome's turbulent history, its magnificent rise to power, followed by an equally dramatic downfall is the subject of scores of books and films, yet these little prepare you for exploring first hand this grand and vivacious city. Rome is a living and breathing museum where fast paced modern life revolves around a stunning ancient backdrop. Historic sites greet you at every turn; be awed by the Colosseum and Pantheon from Rome's glorious Imperial era and across the Tiber river to the unique Vatican City and Reinassance Rome's beautiful Sistine Chapel. In the summer a season of concerts begins with performances in some of the cities' most beautiful palaces, churches and courtyards, as well as contemporary cultural events - films, music, dance and theatre. Combine old wonders with the delights of Modern Rome; street markets, stylish boutiques, the vibrant café culture - in short, La Dolce Vita!
