Pescasseroli lies in a stunning wide plain amid a mountainous landscape of untouched natural beauty in the heart of the National Park of Abruzzo, one of Italy's most ancient natural parks, and still a model for a controlled development in protected areas. Here the park’s mascot, the Marsican brown bear, still survives. The unspoilt environment also supports wolves, chamois deer and golden eagle. In the past, Pescasseroli was an agricultural centre and shepherds would set out with their flock on their annual pilgrimage to new pastures. These old tracks now form the basis of a network of walking paths through forests and along hillsides to dramatic viewpoints. The little town is still a centre of leatherwork, woodcarving and wrought iron and is a good base for a fascinating range of excursions.
