Ålesund is a bustling port town facing the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance to the region of outstanding natural beauty and some of Norway’s most dramatic fjords. Due to its position, it enjoys more days of sunshine throughout the year than areas deeper into the fjords. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904. In addition to the many museums, there is a variety of interesting day trips to the surrounding islands and skerries of local fishing communities dating back to the Viking era.
Making an excellent destination in its own right, it is great for a week or long weekend (using non stop flights from Gatwick on Fridays and Mondays). Ålesund can also be enjoyed as part of our Fjord Explorer multi-centre tour or in a combination with Loen on Nordfjord on our Glaciers & Coast 2-centre combination.
