Our new escorted tour takes in three of Norway’s cities as well as the picturesque Hardangerfjord and the famous ‘Bergen Railway’, often described as one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. Starting in Oslo, take the scenic train journey to the Western Fjords and the pretty fjordside village of Ulvik before continuing onto historic Bergen. Your final stop is Stavanger, home of the iconic Pulpit Rock and some of the most spectacular landscaped gardens in Europe.
Day 1 (Friday)| Fly to Oslo airport. Meet your guide for the short rail transfer by rail to the city centre and Thon Hotel Cecil, your base for the next 2 nights. The hotel is in a convenient central location, close to the National Theatre, Parliament building and a short walk to the Aker Brygge wharf, harbour and famous Opera building. An evening walking tour, welcome drink and evening meal at a nearby hotel are included for your first evening.
Day 2 (Saturday)| A day to take in the sights of Oslo at your own pace. Visit your pick of the many famous fascinating museums, including the National Gallery, which houses Munch’s famous painting ‘The Scream’. The impressive Opera building is worth a visit as Aker Brygge wharf, home to a wide selection of restaurants, bars and shops. We recommend guests purchase a 24-hr Oslo Pass for free use of inner city transport including the harbour ferries, free entrance to most museums as well as discounts in selected local restaurants for your evening meal. The Oslo Pass can be purchased from your guide locally (approx. £39 per adult for 24 hrs).
Day 3 (Sunday)| Sit back and relax on the Bergen Railway across Europe’s highest mountain plateaus and the well-known towns of Geilo and Myrdal before finally reaching Voss. From here, you will transfer deeper into the countryside to quiet Ulvik, an authentic fjordside village on the Hardangerfjord.
Day 4-5 (Monday-Tuesday) | Known as the Orchard of Norway, the Hardangerfjord is a beautiful region of gentle rolling hills with a stunning dramatic backdrop of snow-capped high mountains. As well as offering some excellent walks, Ulvik is conveniently located to enjoy some of Fjord Norway’s most famous attractions. Best known of all is the Flåm railway from Myrdal. Early connections also allow guests to experience the Næroyfjord, the narrowest arm of the Sognefjord. Or why not take the express boat to Eidfjord to visit the impressive 182m Vøringfossen waterfalls and Hardanger Nature Centre? Make sure you don’t miss trying some of the locally produced cider, jam or chutney!
Days 6 (Wednesday) | Today, we continue our journey to the Western coast along the shores of the Hardangerfjord to historic Bergen. Arriving early afternoon, first time visitors will have the chance to join a short, guided tour of the city with your guide, whilst other guests may prefer to explore independently, perhaps taking the Ulriken cable-car, taking one of the walking trails at the top of Mount Fløyen or heading to Edward Grieg’s house to hear a classical concert.
Day 7 (Thursday) | Your hotel, the First Hotel Marin is located on the harbour front in one of the historic Bryggen wharf buildings, and ideally situated to explore the best this city has to offer. We recommend guests purchase a Bergen Card for the duration of their stay which gives free entrance to attractions and useful restaurant discounts. The Bergen Pass can be purchased from your guide locally (approx. £24 per adult for 24 hrs).
Days 8 (Friday) | After an leisurely morning, take the early afternoon departure of the ‘Fjordline’ ferry cruise from Bergen harbour past the coastal islands southbound to the small city of Stavanger. Enjoy the scenery from your reserved seat before enjoying a varied buffet dinner (included in price) on board before disembarking and continuing to your stylish city centre hotel, the Clarion Collection Skagen Brygge.
Day 9-10 (Saturday - Sunday) | Although not as well known as Oslo or Bergen, Stavanger boasts some impressive attractions and day excursions, including a day trip along the Lysefjord to the iconic Pulpit Rock where keen walkers can enjoy a day’s hiking. The optional excursion to the Flor & Fjære gardens is an absolute must during your visit here - a paradise for garden lovers, the landscaped themed gardens of this small island, located a 20 minute boat ride from Stavanger are owned and run by the grandchildren of the original founder. The return boat journey and a delicious meal at the garden restaurant are included in the excursion price. In Stavanger itself, there are several museums documenting the city’s industrial history and the pretty small white wooden houses of the old town now house a selection of boutique shops. A light one course evening meal is available free of charge at the hotel each evening, or if you prefer, a selection of Norwegian and international restaurants are only a few steps away from the hotel.
Day 11 (Monday) | Return to Stavanger airport for your flight back to the UK.
