Hotel Portici is in Riva's historic centre and looks out over the beautiful Piazza Ill Novembre. The buildings been updated but still has a few of the original features of the old palazzo, which give it a really charming feel. Inside the rooms are fresh and simple and if you'd like views across the piazza you can upgrade to a superior room. The spa is bookable for private use (payable locally) - so you can really enjoy the tranquil facilities to yourself.

There's plenty to see and do in the area with the beach, the castle, the MAG museum and the clock tower all nearby. It's a great base for an active holiday too. You can hire boats on the lake and there's lots of opportunity for sailing and wind surfing which the area's known for. There's lots of lovely walks along the lakeside or up into the mountains and the staff can also recommend some great cycling routes for you to try out. Being so close to the ferry point, you'll be able to hop across to other resorts on the lake too.

The bed and breakfast board basis means you can try out Riva's many lovely restaurants each evening. The hotel does have it's own a la carte restaurant and pizzeria. You can eat on the terrace sprawls out into the piazza - the areas pedestrianised so its a lovely bustling spot for people watching. We love the aperativo here - nothing beats a refreshing minty Hugo and tasty snacks after a day out exploring.

Riva

Make sure you pack your sense of adventure for a holiday in Riva del Garda. This is Lake Garda’s most northern town and there’s mountains all around. Some of the best hiking and cycling trails start from here – Strada del Ponale is our favourite and you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the town and lake. For a more unique viewpoint, try some mountain climbing. Riva’s probably best known for its water sports and it’s not uncommon to see windsurfing competitions taking place throughout the summer. You can try it yourself while you’re there as well as sailing and scuba diving.

When you need to slow things down a bit you can stroll along the lake promenade or take a seat in the historic piazza. It’s pedestrianised and has a slight Austrian feel – you’ll find apple strudel and schnitzel on the menu in some cafés. The old town is lovely to walk around – think cobbled streets and flower-filled terraces. There’s lots of bars, shops and restaurants so it has an energetic atmosphere during the summer. We love the beaches here too. The large white pebbles spill into the clear lake and it’s almost impossible to resist a dip.
