Where can you go to ski like a prince or princess? Skiing is a popular past time of the Royal family. Photographs of Royal family members modelling in the snow grace the pages of glossy magazines and celebrity websites every winter.

However, you don’t have to be royalty to enjoy the upmarket ski destinations that attract future kings and queens. We take a look at the most regal ski resorts in the world, where both scenery and guests are majestic…

 

Courchevel, France

Courchevel

The destination for Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s first ever ski holiday. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their young family skiing for the first time back in spring 2016.

This sophisticated and classy resort is a firm favourite not just for members of the British Royal family but also Saudi royalty and the King of Morocco. We imagine it is the phenomenal skiing, charming and lively village atmosphere, and designer boutiques that make this prestigious resort such a popular choice for royalty.

Lech, Austria

The picturesque village of Lech was one of Princess Diana’s favourite ski resorts. She was an annual visitor, and it was the destination for princes William and Harry’s first ever ski trip. It’s not hard to see what makes Lech so appealing – beautiful, snow-sure scenery and an extensive ski area offering 304km of piste.

Among other distinguished guests are the King and Queen of Jordan. The exclusive, Austrian village is also the traditional ski destination for the Dutch royal family, who have visited Lech every year since the 1940s.

The superb, family run Hotel Arlberg was the hotel of choice for Princess Diana. It has a reputation for outstanding service and awarding winning cuisine, as well as an excellent collection of wine. The piste side location and luxurious facilities ensure this is a hotel fit for a king.

Verbier, Switzerland

Verbier

Verbier’s reputation for excellent off-piste and lively après isn’t the only thing that makes it famous. It’s royal connections also make it stand out from the crowd. Prince Harry has been spotted in the resort, and it is a firm favourite of Princesses Beatrice and Eugine, whose mother did a ski season here as a chalet girl.

You might also spy the Belgium royal family in resort, and the Danish royal family rent a chalet in Verbier each winter. With incredible mountain restaurants, and exciting bars and clubs it is easy to see why royalty would clamour to visit year-after-year.

Be treated like royalty at the excellent Hotel Vanessa. Situated in a central yet quiet location, this sophisticated hotel mixes classic Alpine charm with modern style. The smart Brasserie Le V restaurant and stylish bar make for a trendy destination in which to live like a prince.

Klosters, Switzerland

The quiet and traditional resort of Klosters in one of Prince Charles’ favourite ski destinations. He has visited with such regualarity that the resort have named, not one, but two chair lifts after him! It was in Klosters that the world first learnt that William was dating Kate Middleton, as the pair were photographed kissing on the slopes in 2004.

Other high profile visitors to Klosters include the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark, and the King and Queen of Sweden. Visitors to this world-class ski resort should take the opportunity to visit Davos along the scenic railway, which is included on the lift pass.

Honourable mention: Alberta, Canada

Banff - Lake Louise - Jasper

Alberta’s royal connections go back a long time. The Canadian province was named after Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, who married the Governor General of Canada in 1871.

One of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first royal engagements as a married couple was to Canada, where they spent time in Alberta. Prince William's first trip to Canada was in 1998 when he visited Vancouver with Prince Charles and Prince Harry.

Alberta has some of the world’s best skiing with Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper being the most popular resorts. Banff and Lake Louise are situated in the spectacularly beautiful Banff National Park and are only 40 minutes apart. Jasper is famous for its shimmering glaciers and waterfalls, abundant wildlife and family friendly skiing.
