Beginner skiing in Champoluc

The best facilities for beginners are centres around the base stations at Champoluc, but they are limited. The gondola from Champoluc goes straight up to Crest, a mid-mountain nursery area with further gondolas and chair lifts feeding other areas. There is an Italian ski school available in-resort and you can pre-book your private lessons with Inghams, but advancing beyond the nursery slopes for absolute beginners can be a challenge.

Intermediate skiing in Champoluc

Timid intermediates are better off starting at Frachey if they want to avoid some bumpy red runs. If you can tackle a blue run with confidence and feel like advancing on to reds to improve your skills then Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna are great places to build up some confidence. The Monterosa resort is made up of a majority of red runs, varying in difficulty so you are sure to find something that suits your needs wherever you go.

The ski area on weekdays is very quiet, so it's not like the busy slopes of other European countries. Therefore, we find it a great place to tackle some more challenging terrain as you'll be able to progress without worrying about others on the slopes and go at your own pace.

Advanced skiing in Champoluc

Champoluc is famous for its off-piste skiing. There are a variety of off-piste trails, both marked and unmarked and thanks to the snow-sureness of the Monterosa ski area and the relative emptiness of the resort during the week, there is sure to be untouched powder somewhere, just waiting to be skied through! In bad weather, head to the Mandria forest area about Frachey for powder.

There are also some facilities that are good for those with an interest in slalom racing- for a local price there are public race courses with time measurement.

For those seeking an adventure, there is heli-skiing available in the resort which can be booked directly with the appropriate company. Our rep in resort will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Freestyle and terrain parks

Unfortunately there is no established freestyle park in the resort. A few rails, kickers and boxes are sometimes bought in over towards the Gressoney side but often only for a few weeks of the season or for events.

Cross-country

Champoluc offers around 16 km of cross-country skiing trails, catering to both classic and skating styles. The routes follow gentle terrain through peaceful woodland and along the Ayasse river, providing a scenic and tranquil experience ideal for beginners or those looking to enjoy a relaxing ski. Equipment hire is available in the village, and access to the trails is affordable with low-cost daily passes.

For more extensive Nordic skiing, nearby Brusson is a well-regarded cross-country centre with approximately 50 km of trails and a biathlon area. It hosts both flat beginner loops and more technical circuits for experienced skiers. Other options include Periasc and Antagnod, offering around 18 km of trails with open, sunny views of the Monte Rosa massif.

Discover Champoluc

Champoluc is undoubtedly a hidden gem within Italy's Monterosa ski area, offering an authentic Italian experience for those seeking off-the-beaten-path skiing and snowboarding. The town features a good selection of shops, bars, and patisseries, along with the Monterosa Spa, located at the top end of town near the woodland park—perfect for a relaxing day of pampering.

Champoluc's ski area continues to surprise even the most experienced skiers and snowboarders each year. Not only are the pistes impeccably maintained, but they often feel empty compared to the crowded slopes of neighbouring countries. This means minimal queuing, and on weekdays, you can ski freely without navigating through large crowds.

The Monterosa ski area links three main villages—Champoluc, Gressoney, and Alagna—via a modern lift system spanning the valleys. Most people start from the Crest lift in Champoluc, but taking the free ski bus to Frachey (just a 5-minute ride) allows you to bypass four lifts and get on your way to Gressoney and its excellent intermediate skiing. Alternatively, a 10-minute bus ride in the opposite direction brings you to Antagnod, a small area perfect for families or for building confidence on its quiet blue and red runs.

Back in the Monterosa ski area, most slopes cater to intermediate and advanced skiers, but the real highlight is the extensive off-piste terrain. For powder enthusiasts, the Punta Indren lift gives access to un-groomed terrain—ideal for experts, but be sure you’re properly equipped, as this is not for the faint-hearted.

Top Tip: Some black runs in the Monterosa area, including the home run back into Champoluc, were previously classified as red. Only a small section is deemed a black run, and unless it's icy, it's a beautiful, quiet descent—especially early in the morning when most people head towards Gressoney.

Champoluc comes alive on weekends as locals from Milan and Turin flock to the area, creating a lively après-ski scene.

On the mountain, you’ll find a variety of restaurants and bars, all offering affordable prices compared to other European ski resorts. As you ski down into Champoluc, the home run conveniently ends near the ski hire shop, making it easy to drop off your gear and join in the après fun.

Champoluc offers the usual sporting goods stores, a few souvenir shops and one supermarket in the small village. Please note: there is no weekly market. If you are interested in a shopping trip, then a day excursion to the nearby cities of Milan and Turin, or even the nearby town of Aosta is bound to be more successful. Popular souvenirs to take back home include hand-carved wooden clogs!

The MonterosaSPA is the perfect place to relax after a day on the slopes. There are a range of different pools, steam rooms and saunas to enjoy as well as various treatments and massages available. To visit the spa, you need to book in advance - this is best to organise by asking the staff in your hotel. To get there walk up through the centre of town, past the main ski lift heading up towards Frachey and you will find it situated on the left next to the pharmacy.

Enjoy a stress-free tour of the local ski area and get your bearings on the first morning of your holiday with a local qualified guide. Get insight into the best runs and places to ski on the mountain as well as some useful pointers along the way to improve technique.

Sign up to our free ski away day, available to all our guests staying in Champoluc who have pre-booked a lift pass. Our in-resort team will take you to another Aosta Valley resort such as Cervinia, where you can spend the day exploring before jumping on the Inghams coach back to Champoluc.
