Everything you need to know about a ski holiday in Cervinia

Sitting high on the Italian side of the Matterhorn, Cervinia is a real gem of the Alps – a snow-sure resort with mile after mile of wide, sunny slopes and some of the best high-altitude skiing in Europe. Whether you’re here to cruise along its long, scenic runs, cross over to Zermatt for a taste of Swiss charm, or simply soak up that Italian mountain magic, a ski holiday in Cervinia promises something truly special.

High-altitude skiing with incredible views

At 2,050 metres, Cervinia’s altitude means fantastic snow conditions throughout the season – usually from late November right through to late April. The resort links seamlessly with Zermatt in Switzerland, giving you access to one of the largest ski areas in the Alps. Picture gliding down over 350km of perfectly groomed pistes, surrounded by the dramatic Matterhorn peak.

The skiing here is famously forgiving – gentle, wide runs dominate the area, making it a paradise for intermediates and beginners looking to build confidence. Even seasoned skiers love Cervinia for its high-speed, open terrain and long descents – including one of the longest runs in Europe, stretching an incredible 22km from the Plateau Rosa glacier all the way down to town.

Perfect for beginners and intermediates

Cervinia’s ski schools are some of the best around, with friendly, English-speaking instructors ready to help new skiers find their rhythm. The Cretaz and Plan Maison areas are ideal for learners, while intermediates can explore endless blues and reds with minimal crowds and breathtaking panoramas.

For those who fancy pushing their limits, head over to the Zermatt side to take on slightly steeper slopes and enjoy the novelty of skiing across an international border. Just make sure to carry your passport – and don’t miss a photo at the top of the Klein Matterhorn, the highest cable car station in Europe.

Après-ski and mountain dining

Cervinia’s après-ski is laid-back and friendly – think cosy mountain bars, live music, and relaxed evenings sipping Aperol spritz or hot chocolate. The resort has a lovely Italian atmosphere, with plenty of family-run restaurants serving hearty mountain fare – perfect after a big day on the slopes. Try a plate of creamy polenta, a rich cheese fondue, or an indulgent pasta alla valdostana, washed down with local Aosta Valley wines.

If you prefer livelier nights, a few bars near the base lifts get the music going late into the evening – but overall, Cervinia’s vibe is more about good company and good food than big parties.

Off the slopes

Non-skiers and those looking for a break from the pistes will find plenty to do, too. Take a snowmobile ride, try ice karting, or enjoy a peaceful walk or snowshoe trek through the snowy landscapes. The ice skating rink in the village adds another touch of alpine fun.

Cervinia’s village itself is charming – compact, easy to navigate, and full of character. You’ll find everything from boutique shops and cosy cafés to stylish hotels and ski rental stores. And thanks to its altitude, the mountain views from almost anywhere in town are truly spectacular.

Why choose Cervinia for your next ski holiday?

Cervinia ticks all the right boxes: snow-sure slopes, incredible scenery, extensive skiing, and a relaxed Italian charm. It’s one of those resorts where everyone - from first-timers to lifelong skiers - finds something to love. Whether you’re here to carve long, scenic runs, enjoy Italian hospitality, or simply soak up sunshine on a mountain terrace, Cervinia delivers every time.

Inghams Top Tip:

  • Take the cable car up to the Plateau Rosa for unbeatable views of the Matterhorn and a quick stop at one of Europe’s highest mountain cafés – it’s an experience you won’t forget.
