Geilo Norway

Best activities on a Norway ski holiday

Snowy peaks, whisper-quiet forests, fjord views and “fresh-powder” - Norway gives you more than great turns on the psites.

Whether you’re a first-timer learning to wedge, a piste-craving intermediate, a powder-hungry advanced ripper, or someone who loves winter off the skis, Norway serves up adventures by the bucketload and not just on the slopes!

Then simply catch the bus in the afternoon to head back to your hotel in Voss for dinner.

Geilo Norway Northern Lights

Northern Lights

Head for a northern ski resort for your holiday or simply spend a clear evening in the right spot and you might catch the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) - the breath-taking natural lightshow that makes winter nights unforgettable.

There are lots of ways to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights other than taking the chance of standing outside your accommodation - try night skiing, or an evening snowshoe walk.

If you haven't had enough time on the slopes, make the most of the floodlit skiing up on the Landsbybakken slope above the Myrkdalen Hotel. Throughout the winter season, you can head up to the Village Park on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and enjoy the thrill of skiing under the starry night sky.

Throughout the winter season, the slopes stay open a little longer so you can maximise your time on the mountain - there's a range of slopes which are floodlit including those in the Vestila and Slaatta areas. The Vestila SkiCafe stays open until the lifts close on Fridays. There's also a children's disco with lights and music at Trollklubben.

Thursdays (1.5 hours)

Snowshoeing is a a great way to experience the winter landscape around resort. This trip is ideal for first-timers and families, offering a unique way to explore the parts of Geilo that skiers often miss. The tour starts in Vestlia Village, where an experienced guide will take you on a beautiful trail through the untouched Nowegian nature. You'll wander through the peaceful nearby forest and then head out onto the frozen Ustedalsfjorden lake. The whole trip mostly sticks to existing trails and is generally flat, making for a lovely, relaxed activity.

Geilo Norway Tobogganing

Activities on the ice

Snowmobile safaris that blast you across tundra and through valleys; night tobogganing under the stars or ice-karting is brilliant for families and groups looking for a little competition.

These shorter, action-packed experiences are brilliant filler days when we are having a rest day from your skis.

Cycling through Geilo and the scenic surroundings is an excellent way to explore the area. With their larger tyres designed for snow, fat bikes allow you to reach remote areas around the resort that are typically inaccessible during the winter months. Fat biking tours are offered at the resort, typically guided by locals who provide a safe and unforgettable experience.

Challenge your friends and family in an exciting ice-karting race. Take turns navigating the course and see who in your group is the fastest. Ice-karts are simple to drive, much like Go-Karts, but they're raced on a snow-packed track for a thrilling twist.

There are loads of fun toboggan runs around the area, perfect for some great sledging action. They’re open during the day and even for night sledging on certain dates - with cable cars running to get you up to the top. You can easily rent sledges right at the LAAX or Flims valley stations.

Snowshoeing on Mount Hanguren is a fun, family-friendly way to explore the winter wonderland above Voss. After a scenic gondola ride to 820 metres, you’ll step straight into crisp mountain air and snowy forests. Whilst your guide leads the way, you may spot animal tracks and there'll be plenty of opportunities to enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and fjords. Groups are kept small so you get a more personal experience, plenty of time to play in the snow, and the chance to chat with your guide. Warm boots and clothing are provided so you can stay comfortable throughout the trip. You can choose between two snowshoe adventures, depending on the type of experience you’re looking for:

2.5 hour adventure (Wednesdays)

From £109 per adult, £77 per child

This snowshoe hike is relatively easy and is suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities.

4 hour adventure (Tuesdays)

From £148 per adult, £102 per child

This snowshoe hike is relatively easy and is suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities. On the 4 hour adventure, you'll have the opportunity to warm up and cook sausages round an open bonfire.

Thursdays (day trip)

Norway is known for its stunning scenery and dramatic fjords and we’d recommend visiting these during your stay. This fantastic day trip allows you to experience both, taking you on a cruise down one of Norway's most iconic fjords, followed by a trip on the Flåm Railway – voted as one of the most scenic train routes in the world. Your day will start with a bus trip from Voss to Gudvangen. Here you’ll jump on one of the electric cruise ships, holding up to 400 people, and slowly make your way down the Nærøyfjord towards the small town of Flåm. The boat trip takes roughly 2 hours, and you’ll be able to soak in all the views, take pictures of the steep mountains and grab a bite to eat from the onboard café. Once docked up in Flåm, you’ll then hop on the Flåm Train for your trip to Myrdal. Both sides of the train offer fantastic views of snow-capped mountains, frozen waterfalls and deep valleys - you’ll even pass through the mountains in the many man-made tunnels. The train ride to Myrdal takes roughly 45 minutes, and once you arrive, you’ll head back to your resort on a train from Myrdal to Voss.

Family-friendly fun

Norway is wonderfully family friendly: childcare and kids’ ski areas are common, and off-slope adventures like reindeer encounters, short sledging runs and gentle snowshoe routes are brilliant for little legs and big imaginations.

For an afternoon off of the slopes head to the indoor swimming pool. There are three different pools; a 25 metre long exercise pool with swimming lanes, an obstacle course on the weekends, a dive pool and a third pool heated to 32 degrees. There's also a sauna and waterslide.

After a day of arctic adventures, there's two bowling alleys in Geilo - perfect for an evening of entertainment. The Bowl and Dine is a classic American-style diner at the Dr.Holms Hotel, with a six-lane bowling hall. Alternatively, the Vestila Hotel has a modern eight-lane bowling hall and a shuffleboard table - there's also a bar serving a range of drinks and snacks.

Mondays (45 minutes)

If you’re looking for a fun way to challenge friends and family, sledging is the perfect activity. Ditch the traditional wooden sledge for a faster, modern snow racer. Start at the top of the Myrkdalsekspressen and speed your way down the slopes. You’ll take the last ski lift up, so you’ll have the whole slope to yourself all the way down to the Myrkdalen Hotel! Don’t forget to wear appropriate clothing to keep you warm and a helmet to keep you safe.

Time to relax

Give yourself some time to unwind and enjoy all the Norway has to offer. Warm up in a sauna or soak in the hot-tub at the nearest spa and wellness centre (likely in your hotel), eat slow-cooked local fare (reindeer, fish, wild berries) - all part of the traditional cuisine of Norway or just sit back, drink in hand by the fireplace and watch the dusk creep over the mountains.

What could be better than relaxing your muscles after a day on the slopes in a sauna that's surrounded by fantastic mountain views? The mountain sauna is near the ski slopes, just a 5-minute walk from the Myrkdalen Hotel. Book your drop-in slot at the hotel reception before heading over to the sauna. There is no shower in the building, but there is plenty of snow you can use to cool down with an exhilarating rush after your session.

The coolest thing you can do in Norway is ice bathing. Immerse yourself in the ice-cold water, and you will feel refreshed and energised. Afterwards, warm up in the cosy sauna with panoramic views (pay locally).
