Walking holidays in Tuscany

Tuscany is like a picture-perfect postcard come to life. Rolling hills crowned with medieval towns, endless vineyards, fields of sunflowers swaying in the breeze – it’s the very definition of idyllic. And with its unique blend of art, history, food, and outdoor adventures, Tuscany has a way of stealing your heart. It’s a place that invites you to wander at your own pace, whether you’re sipping wine in a centuries-old town square or walking a trail lined with cypress trees and olive groves.

If there’s one thing Tuscany does best, it’s walking. From the famous Camino di San Jacopo – a pilgrimage route that brings walkers from all over the world – to the picturesque hillsides dotted with ancient villages, Tuscany is a walker’s paradise. Wander along the 10km-long Greenway path, taking in lakeside villages, Roman roads, and grand villas, or set your sights on rocky peaks like Monte Grona for panoramic views over the region. And when you need a break? Rest at a charming village café with a plate of pasta and a glass of local wine.

Tuscany is more than just beautiful views – it’s a place brimming with things to see and do. Discover the ancient walls of Lucca, cycle through vineyards, or dip into the thermal baths of Montecatini. If it’s culture you’re after, a day in Florence, with its galleries and piazzas, will fill you with awe. Prefer something slower? Head to the coast and spend the day on the sandy shores of Viareggio, or explore the historic streets of Siena, home to the famous Palio horse race. Tuscany is full of stories, and each one is waiting for you to discover it.

The best way to explore Tuscany is slowly. Cycle through rolling hills lined with vineyards, or take a leisurely stroll along ancient footpaths that connect charming villages. The views are always stunning, from the sun-dappled vineyards to the craggy peaks in the distance. Whether you’re exploring by foot or bike, Tuscany’s countryside will captivate you at every turn. And if you’re after a little more adventure, there are plenty of trails that lead you through forests, past ancient aqueducts, and up to stunning lookout points.

If you’re a foodie, Tuscany will feel like heaven. The region’s wines are legendary, from the rich reds of Chianti to the crisp whites of Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Pair them with hearty dishes like ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, or a juicy Chianina steak, and you’ve got the perfect Tuscan meal. Whether you’re sipping a glass of Brunello at a vineyard or tucking into a bowl of pasta in a quaint town trattoria, every meal here feels like an experience.

Things to do in Tuscany

Head up to Montecatini Alto on the funicular railway- it's over 100 year's old and will take you up to some incredible viewpoints! It's a lovely place to go for lunch and a gelato on a sunny day and you can dip in and out of old churches, admiring the architecture. If you join our guided walk to Montecatini Alto, you'll learn all about the flora and fauna of the surrounding area, as well as the history of the town.

The area around Montecatini and the Tuscan hills are famous for wine making and vineyards, so why not head out into the vineyards for a spot of wine tasting; some of Italy's most famous wines are produced here and we absolutely love sipping them whilst gazing out over the vines. Chianti is one of our favourite wine growing regions, some much so that we have an excursion that will take you to a local Chianti vineyard where you can try a selection of wines, including the revered Vin Santo, all whilst looking over a hilly Tuscan landscape at sunset.
