Walking in Lake Bohinj
Just a short journey from Ljubljana, Lake Bohinj sits within the Julian Alps and is ideal for peaceful walking with a touch of local culture. Trails pass through traditional villages and farmland, with chances to visit local producers or swap walking boots for a kayak on the lake.
For panoramic views, take the cable car up to Mount Vogel or follow the path to Savica Waterfall.
Easier walks include the gentle 1.5-hour route from Stara Fužina to Srednja Vas, while more confident walkers can tackle the steeper climb from St John’s Church to Rudnica for rewarding views over the lake.
Walking in Lake Bled
Lake Bled is a favourite with walkers, thanks to scenic paths around the lake and plenty of viewpoints overlooking the water and island.
Take a traditional boat out to Bled Island, climb Osojnica Hill for panoramic views, or explore the dramatic Vintgar Gorge nearby.
For the best viewpoints, head up to Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica, where sweeping views stretch across the lake to the Julian Alps.
If you prefer something gentler, the walk up to Straža offers great scenery without the steep climb.
A must-do is the Lake Bled Loop Trail, a relaxed walk around the shoreline with lake views, cafés and a swimming spot along the way. For a change of pace, walk out to Radovljica, around 8km away, following a pleasant riverside route.
Walking in Kranjska Gora
Kranjska Gora is one of Slovenia’s most scenic walking bases, set in the far northwest of the country near the Austrian and Italian borders. Surrounded by mountains and wide-open valleys, it’s a brilliant choice if you want variety, views and easy access to well-marked trails.
Easy walks include a stroll around the emerald waters of Lake Jasna and the peaceful boardwalks of the Zelenci Nature Reserve. You'll find almost 100km of walking routes across the Julian Alps and Karavankas, linking flower-filled meadows, valleys and mountain viewpoints.
From Kranjska Gora, you can head into the dramatic Planica Valley and Tamar Valley, or tackle the climb over Vršič Pass for some of the best views in the region. The surrounding area is a patchwork of waterfalls, traditional villages and alpine trails, leading straight into Triglav National Park.
Walking in Bovec
Bovec sits between the peaks and rivers of the Julian Alps, right on the edge of Triglav National Park. This small alpine village is a great base for exploring one of Slovenia’s most unspoilt regions on foot.
The area is ideal for outdoor lovers, with options ranging from gentle village walks to longer trails through valleys and mountain scenery. The striking Soča River, known for its clear turquoise water, runs close by and features in several scenic walking routes.
Higher up, trails lead to the crystal-clear lakes of Kriška jezera, where views stretch across rugged peaks and wildlife sightings, including ibex, are common.
For something more relaxed, stroll through Bovec itself to see traditional houses and historic churches, or follow easy paths along the valley floor.
With its quiet trails, dramatic scenery and uncrowded feel, Bovec is a strong choice for a walking holiday that feels peaceful, scenic and refreshingly off the beaten track.
