Ischgl offers a paradise for walkers, with over 300 kilometres of marked trails to explore. Whether you’re tackling the rugged old smuggler's trail up to the Viderjoch ridge along the Swiss border or walking a section of the Paznaun High Trail, there’s something for every level of hiker. Surrounded by breath-taking mountain landscapes, each trail promises unique views and a refreshing outdoor experience through rolling hills, rugged peaks, rocky passes and to hidden lakes. With lifts available throughout the valley and even over into Switzerland, you can easily access some of the region’s most scenic routes and enjoy a truly memorable walking holiday.

Ischgl is a very popular Nordic walking area with an excellent choice of trails and instructions to follow, making it super easy to navigate your way around.

The local Tourist Office runs a programme of guided walks in Ischgl, Galtür, Kappl and See. Or, if you stay in the Hotel Post they offer their guests an exclusive daily guided walk with their own hotel's guide.

Our favourite self-guided walks in Ischgl

  • Terrain: Gravel path 

Take in panoramic views of the Silvretta reservoir on this easy yet rewarding circular walk. Starting at Galtür Bielerhöhe, cross the bridge and follow the gravel path along the dam. The route guides you past a dramatic waterfall and offers breath-taking views, including the towering Piz Buin. The return leg leads you back to Bielerhöhe, where a surprising light-and-sound tunnel adds a unique twist to the trail. Enjoy a well-deserved break at one of the restaurants before catching the bus back to Ischgl.

  • Walking time: Approx. 5.5 hours 
  • Terrain: Partly rocky ridge walk, followed by wide paths 

Step back in time with the Smugglers Tour, a fascinating hike that combines history and stunning views. The 14km trail winds from Ischgl to Samnaun, with rocky ridges and a serene valley walk. You’ll be walking in the footsteps of smugglers who once braved the harsh weather to trade goods across borders. Whether you take the lifts or hike, the charming village of Samnaun awaits. Aim to catch the 2:30 pm Twinliner gondola from Samnaun to ensure you have plenty of time to catch all the other chairlifts ont he way back.

For those looking for a challenge, the Rauher Kopf hike offers a rewarding ascent with spectacular views of Ischgl and beyond. Starting from the Silvrettabahn mid-station, the route takes you through rocky terrain and forest paths, with a tough detour leading to the stunning Berglisee lake. Reaching the summit at 2,478m, you'll be treated to sweeping vistas before descending to the Mathon Wildererhütte for a well-earned rest and bus ride back to Ischgl.

Après-ski gives way to a more relaxed pace during a summer holiday in Ischgl. Nestled high in the sunny, green Paznauntal Valley and surrounded by majestic mountains, this charming former farming village blends sporty energy with a touch of luxury. Ischgl offers charming boutiques for a spot of shopping and the iconic Silvretta Therme Spa, where a dip in the panoramic outdoor pool after a wellbeing massage is a must. Nature lovers will enjoy Madleinsee, while families and adventurers can explore Pardatschersee with its play areas, adventure trails, and suspension bridges. Just outside town, Vidersee Lake features the Vider Truja Adventure Park, a water-themed park with fountains, waterfalls, and a Barefoot Trail. It’s a 7.5 km walk, but you can take a gondola if you prefer.

Make your way to the pavilion of the Kulturzentrum St. Nikolaus for a laid-back evening of folk music. The weekly summer open-air concert by the local brass band is held most Thursday evenings.

Pack a picnic and hike to the emerald green waters of Lake Berglisee for the day. The water is revitalising and there are grill stations lakeside for your picnic. A little further down the valley from Ischgl, the old villages of See and Kappl are both worth a visit. See has a shallow swimming lake which is great for the kids and you can hire parasols and deckchairs. Kappl has its own waterpark, and the many little cafés in the main street are a perfect place to stop for a Schnapps before you head back to Ischgl.

Explore beyond Ischgl with easy connections to nearby destinations. Spend your day on the other side of the mountain in St. Anton, easily accessible by public bus within two hours via a scenic drive down alpine roads and through the valley. You can also spend a day in Switzerland from the Twinliner Samnaun double-decker cable car, included free of charge in your Silvretta Premium Card. 

Ischgl has become a bit of a foodie hotspot with some award-winning restaurants where you can tuck into Austrian specialities like their traditional Ischgler Käsespätzle or sweet pancake desserts. You’ll find some of the best restaurants are in the hotels like The Stüva at Hotel YSCLA (you can’t miss the stunning exterior) recently voted one of the six best restaurants in Austria.

Wander through the village at your own pace as you browse the local shops and café hop. Explore the picturesque town with pastel-coloured buildings and traditional architecture. Enjoy a chilled afternoon of coffee sipping, pastry eating and sit-back relaxing. 

Ischgl has a great network of public transport and lifts that make getting around the area really easy.

Please note: if you decide to visit Samnaun, and want to return to Ischgl by lift, you should depart Samnaun by 2:30pm at the latest to allow time to get back on the lift network.

Buses

You can use your included Silvretta Premium Card to access free use of all buses along the valley. The summer bus allows you to explore by foot beyond the direct village access itself, with plenty of routes and trails to explore in Paznaun from Landeck-Zams train station to Galtür Bielerhöhe. This convenient service runs several times a day, meaning walking hotspots could not be easier to reach.

For climbers, Ischgl is a fantastic central location to visit with easy access via public transport to indoor bouldering centres at either the Alpinarium Galtür or Boulder Gym Flirsch. You can also test your strength ability with more advanced outdoor challenges on the multi-pitch and via ferrata climbing routes.

If you're a beginner or an avid water sports person, rafting in the Paznaun region is always a thrilling activity to do during your holiday. Book a rafting tour, grab your paddle and head out on a wild adventure on the local rivers with a guide to explore the stunning scenery from a new point of view. If you don't mind getting a bit wet, canyoning is great fun and an exciting way to experience the canyons and pools.

Ischgl is a biking paradise with 1,000 kilometres of trails for all skill levels, from mountain biking to leisurely rides through scenic valleys and alpine terrain. With lift access to higher altitudes, you can explore new routes and even cycle into Switzerland for more adventure. Ischgl is the perfect place to combine action, stunning scenery, and cycling thrills.

The 'Ischgl Trailground' riding technique park is a great place to practice, and with the Silvretta Premium Card you get one free ride on each lift with your bike per day (or purchase the Bike Unlimited pass to get more runs on each lift).

Discover the history of the cableways at the Silvrettaseilbahn AG cable car company within the technological museum. If art is your thing, the seven-kilometre circular art trail and Mathias-Schmid museum provide an insight of the artists life through incredible display boards.

Ischgl Vider Truja

Located at 2,320 metres altitude, a short walk from the Silvrettabahn A1 or Fimbabahn A3 lifts, the Vider Truja adventure park is full of exciting things for the children and there's the lake and Kneipp facilities which are perfect for cooling the feet after a hike.

From bouldering towers for older children, to adventure-trails and trampolines for the younger ones. This recreational ground covers a large area, amazing for children to run around while parents get comfy and supervise from one of the wooden loungers.

Zoom down the two-kilometre mountain zipline at 85 kilometres an hour. Fly through the valley together as you race your friends or family. Three minutes of flying at 50 metres above the ground will definitely be something the children remember. It's open Tuesday to Sunday and you can use your included Silvretta Premium Card to get a discounted rate on this wild adventure.

Adventure Stage Ischgl

If you have younger children, head to the adventure stage at the Lake Schwarzwasser and Lake Pardatschersee which has stone, wood and rope installations along beautiful nature trails. Wander through the forest and along the lake shores, experiencing constant action and highlights for the kids to burn some energy. Climb, balance, slide and jump your way through the interactive obstacles along the way to add an exciting element to your walk.

Dip your toes in the lake to cool off or take the full plunge and go for a swim. The bathing lake in See is surrounded purely by nature and a range of senses for the younger ones to explore. From shallow children's area to rocky beach areas, this natural leisure area is full of fun for the whole family. There's also an adventure playground and a kiosk selling light refreshments.

Minigolf Ischgl

With 18 holes, the mini-golf in Ischgl is a great hit for families with younger children. Located in Trisannaweg you can take a leisurely stroll from the village centre. Grab an ice cream from the kiosk to celebrate the winner at the end. You can also find beach volleyball and trampolines at this active centre too, great for children and adults alike.
