Walking in Alpbach

Walks and hikes

Walking Trails:
900km of walking trails
Terrain:
Diverse terrain from alpine meadows and forest trails to rugged peaks

The Alpbachtal region has been awarded the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality – a sign you’re in for something special. With over 900 kilometres of marked trails, there’s a walk here for everyone, whether you’re after a gentle stroll to a gourmet mountain hut or aiming to tick off as many local summits as possible. Wander through shady forests, across picture-perfect Alpine meadows, and up to rugged peaks and gorges – there are even trails that lead to ideal sunset spots. Even better, with the Alpbachtal Card (given to you free by your hotel on arrival), you can use the walker’s lifts and buses at no extra cost.

There’s plenty of walks that will interest the children, and you can usually reward them with a playground at the end. Try the panorama path, or walk to the top of the Wiedersbergerhorn mountain – the ascent is only 300 metres so it’s manageable for keen adventurers. Or head to the pushchair-friendly Kundl gorge, see what discoveries you can make on the path of contemplation or head to Juppi’s enchanted forest.

Alpbachtal treasure map

The treasure map shows all the fun things going on around the area for families to get involved with and the Alpbachtal Card makes exploring the area easy.

The Alpbachtal Card is packed with summer benefits, including the opportunity to join guided walks that are hosted by the tourist office and offered either free of charge, or at a discounted rate, to Alpbachtal Card holders. Booking is required directly through the tourist office.

  • Grade: Easy
  • Distance: 2.15km
  • Walking time: 45 minutes
  • Terrain: Gravel path

This gentle riverside walk follows the Mühlbach stream, weaving past sculptures, a herb garden, a pond, and a Kneipp basin. Small bridges and cairns mark the way, with a short climb leading to the ‘Point of Central Energy’ before the trail descends again past the ‘Well of Health’. The wide, well-maintained path makes this an ideal choice for families, with plenty of spots to rest and take in the surroundings.

  • Grade: Challenging
  • Distance: 17.5km
  • Walking time: 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Terrain: High alpine, requires good fitness and sure-footedness

A demanding but rewarding climb to the highest peak in the Alpbachtal. Beginning in Inneralpbach, the trail winds through forests and past mountain farms before climbing steeply to the Alplkreuz. From here, the route follows the ridge, with breath-taking views of the Central Alps, including the Grossglockner and Grossvenediger mountains. A long but memorable hike for experienced walkers.

Discover Alpbach

  • Wander through the quaint, 'chocolate-box' village with its iconic wooden houses and flower-filled balconies
  • Explore some of the best hiking trails in the Kitzbühel Alps, offering spectacular views and peaceful meadows
  • Treat yourself to hearty mountain cuisine in a traditional alpine hut – the perfect way to refuel after a day of adventure

Known for its rustic charm and alpine scenery, Alpbach holidays are ideal for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. It’s a village straight from the pages of a fairy-tale, surrounded by meadows and forests set against the Gratlspitz peaks. Wooden houses with flower-filled balconies decorate the streets, and the surrounding farms have been passed down through generations, making it one of the best places to tuck into mountain food. Gondolas glide up to mountain tracks, walking trails meander along valleys, and three gorges line up some seriously dramatic views. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or simply soaking in the scenery, summer holidays in Alpbach promise relaxation and adventure in equal measure.

You’ll not be short of things to do in the Alpbachtal – along side the hundreds of kilometres of walking and biking trails, you can try some via feratta, or practice your navigation with some geocaching. Or, why not get up higher for the very best view of the valley on a paraglide.

There are three gorge walking trails within easy reach of Alpbach. A 1.5-hour ramble along Tiefenbach Gorge winds past a turquoise river and otherworldly rock formations. The speedy waters of the Kaiser Gorge are a favourite with white-water rafters and experienced kayakers, and the Kundl Gorge lays out an easy path along one of the most dramatic canyons in Austria.

Cyclists are in their element in Alpbach too, with routes including forest tracks, high-altitude paths between mountain huts and quiet mountain roads.

Family holidays in Alpbach are filled with exciting activities. The Wiedersbergerhorn lift takes you to Lauserland, a mountain playground with an alpine rollercoaster, panoramic towers and rope courses, perfect for an active family day out. Further along the Alpbach Valley, the lift from Reith im Alpbachtal leads to Juppi’s Enchanted Forest, where kids can enjoy tree swings, wobbly bridges, and magical surroundings. Reith also has a beautiful village lake, ideal for a refreshing swim after a day of adventure.

Alpbachtal family program

With the family program you can get closer to nature and enjoy some family time in the mountains. It runs Monday to Friday, from the start of July to the end of August and is included in the Alpbachtal Summer Card – every day is a different adventure to share with your children (parental supervision is required at all times).

Look out for the Alpbachtal treasure map, which shows all the fun things going on around the area for families to get involved with and the Alpbachtal Card makes exploring the area easy.

Many of the houses, shops and cafés in Alpbach haven’t changed since the first log was laid. They all showcase a distinct woodcarving technique that shapes everything from gables and altars to the furniture in hotels and restaurants. Architecture isn’t the only thing special about Alpbach. Alpbachtal Hüttenjause food platters lay out Tyrolean specialities such as mountain sausages and hay-milk cheese (tastier than it sounds). Most ingredients are plucked from the farms of the Alpbach Valley, some of which have been in the same family for over 300 years. Go to the Alpine Farmers’ Museum, about a 20-minute bus ride away, to see how people lived in centuries past.

Getting around Alpbachtal is easy thanks to the network of local buses and mountain lifts that are included with your Alpbachtal Card.
