Walking in Bovec

Walks and hikes

Walking Trails:
97km
Terrain:
Varied mountainous terrain with rugged mountains, forested valleys, gorges and rivers

Take to the challenge of hiking up Mount Svinjak, and gaze over rewarding views from its unique peak. Here you can often see herds of ibex which are able to climb almost vertical rocks! Or, stroll through the village, taking in the World War I monuments, admiring Gothic churches and traditional local houses and wandering along the shore of a meandering river. There's so much to see and do in this undiscovered part of Slovenia.

Bovec sits at the edge of the Triglav National Park, in the Julian Alps. UNESCO declared the Julian Alps as Slovenia's first biosphere reserve of international importance, and the Triglav National Park contains some of its best bits. Discover the Šunik Water Grove, or the source of the River Soča which springs from a cave; home to a small subterranean lake. You can walk the famous Soča Trail from the river's source all the way back to Bovec. Along the way, admire the dramatic Great Soča Gorge from the wooden hanging bridge where the gorge begins. Or, head to the end of the gorge where the whirling rapids calm down and there's a popular swim spot.

Our favourite self-guided walks in and around Bovec

Bovec River Soča

Starting from Kobarid, this gentle walk leads to the striking Kozjak Waterfall. Along the way, take in views from Napoleon’s Bridge, one of the best spots to capture the Soča River’s turquoise waters. The route passes through forests and past a campsite, offering a good place to stop for refreshments. Kobarid itself is worth exploring, with a WWI Museum and a monument above the village. There is a small entrance fee for the waterfall, and a refreshing swim in the river is a great way to end the walk.

Bovec village

This circular walk from Bovec climbs to the Čelo Fortress, a well-preserved Austro-Hungarian military site from 1915. The route follows forested paths to the fortress, which offers panoramic views over the Bovec basin and surrounding peaks. Once a key defensive position, it overlooks both Vršič and Predil passes. The return route descends through Plužna village, where a water fountain provides a refreshing stop before heading back to Bovec.

The Juliana Trail, a 270km circular long-distance trail, offers an exciting opportunity to explore the area that lies at the doorway of the Julian Alps. The trail is divided into 16 sections, each of them around 17.5 km long. The sections are designed so that, at the completion of each, hikers can take a break and regain their strength to continue their journey. The trail will take you as high as 7,163 metres in altitude, but its terrain is generally quite gentle, making it great for family outings.

The picturesque village of Bovec lies between the mountains and rivers of the Julian Alps on the doorstep of the Triglav National Park, which covers four percent of Slovenia. With the highest peaks of the Julian Alps on one side and the bright-blue River Soča on the other, Bovec is the perfect holiday destination for reconnecting with nature. You’ll recognise the beautiful River Soča as the location for many of the scenes in the 2008 film 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' - it's so blue it could pass as a tropical sea.

The River Soča is the perfect spot to try some white-water rafting, kayaking or perhaps some paddle-boarding on a calmer section of water if you don't want such a wild ride. Admire the scenery from above with a picturesque paraglide, or hop on a bike and explore on two wheels. With all the natural beauty around you, your camera will constantly be busy snapping pictures.

Things to do in Bovec

Bovec Soča river watersports

Bovec is situated along the River Soča, known as the emerald river, renowned for its stunning colour and fast flow and ideal for watersport activities like white-water rafting. You can also find calmer areas of the river which are great for paddle-boarding and canoeing. This river is perfect for gentle riverside strolls, which may even take you across tension bridges or down rocky paths.

Drifting along the emerald River Soča in a raft is a wonderful experience that's fun for all ages. Rafting in the Soča Valley is one of those active trips that simply must be ticked off your adventure bucket list. The most popular rafting route on the River Soča is 10 kilometres long and runs from the bridge near Log Čezsoški, near Boka Waterfall, to Trnovo ob Soči.

Older children and teenagers can learn the basics of kayaking in the calm sections of the Soča River. Local instructors offer beginner-friendly lessons to help them build confidence on the water while having a blast.

Soar over Bovec with on a once in a lifetime tandem paragliding experience. Starting in Bovec, you can descend from either Kanin where you can see the Adriatic Sea on a clear day, Kobariški Stol which is the longest mountain ridge in Slovenia, Mangart which is Slovenia's third highest mountain, or Kuk, the highest of the Kolovrat mountains. If you're feeling adventurous book a zip-lining trip and whizz through the Učja Valley; taking you from mountain-top viewpoints and down into the depths of the Učja Gorge.

Bovec village

The Kobarid Museum will teach you about the heritage of the Isonzo Front on a Slovenian, European and a global scale. Unique demonstrations of fights and life during the war, the exhibits, the rich photo material and the multi-vision displays tell the touching story of hard and bloody days next to the River Soča; events once recounted by Ernest Hemingway and Erwin Rommel.

Kluže fortress - this majestic fort above the Koritnica gorge is one of the most visited cultural sights in the Soča valley. It's an important monument to the defence against Turkish invasions, Napoleon's army and attacks during World War I.

Introduce your kids to history at the Ravelnik Outdoor Museum, where they can explore preserved World War I trenches, bunkers, and pathways. The interactive and hands-on experience makes learning about the past engaging and memorable for children.

Enjoy a leisurely ride through the village or take on the mountain passes for more of a challenge. You can put your leg muscles to the test on a mountain bike, or ease your way along on an e-bike. For a scenic ride, the 21 kilometre trail covering the villages of Kal-Koritnica and Čezsoča will also have you ascending and descending Mt. Javoršček for a view of Bovec from above.
