The Sentido Galomar is an adult-friendly hotel set in an exquisite location, built into the cliffs of Caniço. It offers an enviable position and breath-taking sea-views. Enjoy days lounging by the outdoor salt water pool or heading down to the bathing platform (not adult-only) where you have direct access to the sea, relax and enjoy the sound of waves lapping against the rocks – is there anything more perfect? 

Fantastic pool and spa facilities

Having undergone a recent renovation the Galomar has been transformed into a modern yet comfortable hotel that’s warm and welcoming. You’ll find a spa onsite where you can enjoy treatments and massages (payable locally), perfect for soothing tired legs after exploring the Levadas of Madeira. There’s an outdoor pool (salt water) that sits on the cliff-top looking out towards the Atlantic Ocean and is a great spot to watch the sunset. There’s also the unique addition of a seawater pool at the bottom of the cliffs at Lido Galomar bathing platform with direct access to the sea.

Take a dive in the ocean

Its not often that a hotel resort is situated in an underwater nature reserve and has a diving school attached to it (bookable and payable locally) and believe us when we say you'll want to dive right into these beautiful waters. These waters are some of most protected in Portugal and are therefore full of marine life.  

Sustainability focused

Located next to an underwater nature reserve, this eco certified hotel recognises the importance of protecting biodiversity, as well as empowering local communities. It generates its own energy via solar panels and displays live energy usage figures for guests in every room.
Its aims include reducing water and chemical use, reducing food waste, planting island endemic species and informing guests about how to respect the local environment. It also supports local charities, including donating 50 meals a week to a homeless support centre.

Canico

Caniço is more charming than a chocolate on a pillow. It’s much quieter than Funchal, so if you want to switch off a bit and explore the island – this is the place for you.

There’s a small square where you can have a look around the lovely shops and restaurants. Go a little further down to the coast for the promenade to get sea views and sunny bathing platforms.

Water babies, walk this way 

The Garajau Partial Natural Reserve is a marine reserve that was set up to keep underwater life thriving. You’ll be dropping into crystal-clear waters to see giant manta rays and the dusky grouper – among many others. 

Pop to the top

The Cristo Rei lookout point never fails to impress – there’s the incredible view but you’ll definitely be getting your phone out for a shot of the dramatic Cristo Rei statue.

Basecamp for exploration 

Caniço makes a great base for exploring the island and having somewhere relaxing to come back to. If you get the urge to pick up the pace, you can take a quick trip to Funchal for all the perks of city living – there’s a super reliable bus which makes it easy to get to.

Breakfast is a delicious buffet served from 8am - 10am.

For half board or full board dinner is at the Restaurant Ondamar in the neighbouring Hotel Sentido Galosol which offers a daily themed buffet (the Restaurant Ondamar is not adults-only but has a section for Hotel Sentido Galomar guests). If guests wish to try out the other hotel restaurants then you can receive a credit to use towards your meal and pay locally for any additional charges, booking in advance is necessary.
