Delightfully peaceful traffic-free village, accessed only by cable car

Mürren's one of Europe’s most historic ski areas - known as the cradle of Alpine skiing. It's located high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley on a dramatic terrace, on the other side of the valley from Wengen. The idyllic traffic-free village is only accessible by cable car and is the ideal retreat from the busier resorts. James Bond fans might recognise the ski area as it featured in the film 'On Her Majestys Secret Service'. 

Skiing and snowboarding in Mürren

The resort has its own ‘Mürren-Schilthorn’ ski area with around 54 kilometres of slopes. There is a range of slopes for all abilities, although it is more suited to experienced skiers and boarders as there are some of the most challenging runs in the region here. Non-skiers can take advantage of the excellent winter walking and sledging with the non-skiers’ lift pass.

Bars and restaurants in Mürren

Mürren has a range of restaurants both on and off the mountain, serving traditional regional classics such as fondue, raclette and rösti. You can also find the renowned Piz Gloria, the world’s first revolving restaurant, easilrecognisable as Blofelds mountain top hideout. Be sure to try the '007 burger' which is stamped with the famous '007' logo.

Beginners skiing in Mürren

There are nursery slopes in the village for the first time skiers and boarders. Once you have gained more confidence, there is some nice easy runs in the Allmenhubel, a secluded quieter area, accessible by funicular. 

Intermediates skiing in Mürren

The Murren-Schilthorn area has plenty of blues and red runs to start the day. Once you have warmed up your legs head down Red 3, which follows the Inferno track down to Lauterbrunnen. From here take the Jungfraubahn up to Wengen where you have access to the wider ski area, head over to the Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen areas for long red runs.

Advanced skiing in Mürren

The Schilthorn has some great black runs heading back towards the village, confident skiers should head down slope 9 (Direttissima), which is the steepest slope in the Jungfrau area with a gradient of 88%. Have your moment on the famous 15km 'Inferno' piste which takes you all the way down to Lauterbrunnen, conditions permitting.

Snowboarding in Mürren

The Skyline Snowpark on the Schilthorn is perfect for practising your freestyle skills, containing jumps, boxes and rails to keep you entertained. 

Experienced snowboarders will enjoy the extensive off piste opportunities, there are some challenging trails down from the Schiltgrat ridge dropping down into the Blumental bowl.

Restaurants, food and drink

No visit is complete without visiting Piz Gloria, the world’s first revolving restaurant at the top of the Schilthorn, easily recognizable as Blofelds mountain top hideout.  In the resort itself and on the mountain you can find a handful of more traditional restaurants serving regional classics such as fondue, raclette and high quality meat dishes. 

Apres, bars, clubs and nightlife 

Once the slopes are closed for the day, Murren is far more sedate than some of the surrounding resorts. Whilst you are on the mountain make the most of the winter sun on one of the sun terraces dotted around. Once back in resort, the majority of bars are within the hotels lining the street. If you are after a bit of nightlife, head to the only nightclub in the resort. Bliemlichäller located in the basement of the Hotel Blumental to dance the night away. 

Spas and relaxation 

If you fancy a day off the slopes the Alpine Spa is the perfect place to relax. Within the spa area you have access to a range of saunas, a steam bath, plunge pool and the swimming pool among other relaxation areas. Entry is reduced with a guest card issued by your hotel. 

Shopping 

There is a Co-Op grocery store and a handful of sport shops and souvenir shops selling regional produce dotted around the village. 

Equipment rental and sports shops are typically open until late in the day so you can maximise your time on the mountain before returning your equipment at the end of your last day. 

Festivals and events

The Inferno Downhill race is held annually in Mürren, it is the largest amateur downhill ski race where people race down the Lauterbrunnen valley. Expected dates for the races are between the 24th - 27th January 2024. 

Leave the Lauberhorn races for the professionals, the run challenges professional skiiers speeding down the longest World Cup downhill run. The Lauberhorn races are held in mid-January in Wengen. The expected dates are between the 12th-14th January 2024. The Super Combined is held on Friday, the Downhill on Saturday and the Slalom on Sunday.

Things to do in Mürren

Curling & ice skating

Swap your skis or board for a pair of skates and enjoy skating around the artificial ice rink at the Alpines Sportzentrum, alternatively have a go at curling and see if you can win the game. 

Helicopter sightseeing tours of Jungfrau massif as well as heli-skiing

Take to the sky's and fly over the famous Eiger, Mönch & Jungfraujoch on a helicopter tour of the region. For the more adventurous, heli-skiing tours are available in the region allowing you access to the untouched snowy slopes. 

Parapenting

If you want a truly memorable experience in the Swiss Alps, book onto a parapenting flight over Mürren and the wider valley, 

Jungfraujoch ‘Top of Europe’ and Aletsch Glacier

Head up to the 'Top of Europe' at the UNESCO heritage site of the Jungfraujoch and Aletsch Glacier, located at an impressive  3,454 metres, for incredible views across the region. Whilst you are up there, make sure to check out the Ice Palace where there is a variety of ice sculptures to marvel at.

Schilthorn Skyline Snow Experience

Head up the Schiltorn for a range of activities, whether you want to channel your inner James Bond at Spy World where you can learn more about the film and go on a helicopter simulator. Whizz down the dedicated toboggan run

Alternatively walk along Switzerland s own 'Walk of Fame' which pays tribute to the cast and contributors to the iconic James Bond movie/ 

'Ice Magic' ice skating experience Interlaken

Enjoy an afternoon in Interlaken at the Ice Magic winter wonderland, enjoy whizzing around the ice on skates, play an ice hockey match or visit the Piazza for a range of food and drink. 

Local market

Throughout the winter, the Gimmelwald market women organise a market day once a week in Muerren, selling their food products and handicrafts.

The last part of the transfer to Mürren is by cable-car/rail which is approx. 30mins from Lauterbrunnen.
