Ratings/reviewsClick for full ratings

The Grand Hotel Excelsior is all about the sea views. It’s about 1,500 feet above the town of Amalfi and on the edge of the cliff, which means you get uninterrupted views from pretty much everywhere in the hotel. Every room comes with a private balcony so you can step out each morning and enjoy relaxing sea views before heading to breakfast. We love the restaurant's terrace - it’s hard not to linger here over your morning coffee when the views are this good.

When you do manage to tear yourself away, it’s quite easy to visit the Amalfi Coast and explore the area. There’s a free shuttle from the hotel that will have you in the centre of Amalfi in less than 15 minutes. There’s lots to see and do in the town and it’s a popular sight for lots of tourists. Buses leave regularly from the centre of town to Ravello, Sorrento and other coastal towns. The best way to travel is by boat though – jump on board and enjoy the views as you sail to Positano or the quieter towns of Maiori and Minori. Boats run frequently and are a cost-effective way to explore the region.

There’s lots of opportunities to relax at the hotel. The pool has plenty of loungers that look out over the town and sea. There’s a private beach club too (you'll need to reserve your spot in advance) with a restaurant for delicious lunches. Make sure you check out the American Bar before dinner. It’s a great spot to watch the sun set and try some local limoncello. The restaurant’s open for dinner if you don’t fancy heading back into town. It’s got a nice terrace that’s a great spot for al fresco dining.

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour 35 mins by private car from Naples airport.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most recognisable images of Italy. This 50-kilometre-long coastline of plunging cliffs is topped with sky-scraping viewpoints. The towns step down the cliffs in a jumble of pastel houses and church domes, before fetching up at tiny harbours where you'll find some of the country's finest seafood.

What to see on an Amalfi Coast holiday

Although alike in looks, each town has its own forte. Ravello is known for its terraced gardens and clifftop summer music festival. Amalfi has a grand eighth-century cathedral, while Positano offers the Byzantine Church of Santa Maria Assunta and a great beach to relax on.

Amalfi Coast holidays also leave you perfectly poised for exploring the rest of the region from Sorrento, Ischia and Capri to Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Things to Do

Things to see and do

The Amalfi Coast isn't all boat trips and leisurely lunches by the sea. This region of Italy has tonnes of history to explore and each of the towns offers something new to see. Some of our favourite things to do here are:

  • Pompeii & Herculaneum: These Roman towns were destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in a devastating eruption in 79 AD, burying them in the heavy volcanic ash that helped preserve them for centuries. Take a guided tour to learn all about them.
  • Paestum: Once one of Italy’s biggest ancient Greek cities, Paestum is now an archaeological site with well-preserved Greek temples and is a couple of hours drive from the Amalfi Coast. Make sure to stop at an authentic mozzarella farm along the way, too.
  • Explore the Coast: The towns along the Amalfi Coast are easily explored by local buses and boats. Hop on a boat at Amalfi and visit beautiful towns like Positano and Maiori or sit back and enjoy the views from the road on the way to Ravello.
  • Visit Sorrento: This bustling town has plenty to do. Sip coffee in Piazza Tasso, head down to the marina for a seafood lunch and browse the artisan shops.
  • See Capri: Sail across to Capri for the day - one of our favourite Italian islands. We love the towns where you can shop in designer stores and eat in family-run restaurants. Head for Anacapri for the best sea views.

Food & drink

Italian food doesn't get much better than on the Amalfi Coast. Expect fresh seafood, light salads and home-made pasta. Mozzarella is big here, it's produced in Campania and the caprese salads are a must-have. We love washing everything down with a limoncello after.

Activities

Keen hikers will love the Amalfi Coast. There's some great trails that head up the cliffs where you're rewarded with uninterrupted sea views. They'll take you away from the tourist bustle and past family farms and lemon groves. The Footpath of the Gods is probably the most famous. It starts just a short bus ride from Amalfi and runs for four miles.
