If you're looking for an authentic mountain retreat, Pension Angelo's a great choice. It's a family-run guest house just outside the centre of Corvara. It's location at the top of the hill means you get some fantastic views.

Relaxed mountain style

The décor here is a simple alpine style- it's a cosy place to come back to after a busy day and the staff are very friendly. The four star Sporthotel Panorama next door is the sister hotel and you can use some of their fantastic facilities. If it's your first time in Corvara, we'd recommend joining one of the guided excursions that the staff run. It's a great way to get to know the area. If you get some time before dinner, head to the small wellness area to chill out in the steam room or sauna. If you fancy a swim, you can use the pool at the Sporthotel Panorama (payable locally).

Corvara & Colfosco

From swimming in the pure waters of Biotope lake and walking through national parks, to discovering the WWI trenches and open-air museum at Cinque Torri and making a long Italian lunch the activity of the day - Corvara and Colfosco has your summer holiday in Italy covered. Both villages sit in the Alta Badia region, known for its fantastic traditional food and wine, and mountains so uniquely beautiful they’re UNESCO protected.

Summer in Alta Badia: national parks, geological sites, mountain lakes

There are two nature parks around Corvara and Colfosco, the Puez-Geisler (or Puez Odle) and Fanes-Senes-Braies. Together they provide mile-upon-mile of pathways to explore and walk through- far more than can be covered in a single summer holiday - with stunning views, colourful wildflowers and various geological sites well worth a visit. For a day out, hop on the local bus and head up the road to La Villa to potter about the pretty village and grab a bite to eat next to Sompunt Lake. On your way back to Corvara, visit the 16th century Colz Castle in a picture-perfect location.

Eating your way through the Dolomites: a taste of the Italian Tyrol

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to the food and drink in Corvara and Colfosco; Alta Badia is one of the best regions in the Dolomites for gastronomy, whether it’s a casual pizza you’re after or a Michelin-starred meal. The key is fresh, local ingredients, from speck (cured Italian ham) to alpine cheese and dairy products. A mountain hut, also known as a rifugio, is the place to head for a low-key, traditional lunch, and they tend to have the best views of the surrounding mountains.

Family walking through a UNESCO heritage site

The Dolomite mountains are no doubt the main attraction of Corvara and Colfosco, and walking through the landscape is why most come to the region in the summer. There are so many trails to choose from; the Cascate del Pisciadu walk is roughly 8km, starting in Corvara and ending at a beautiful waterfall. For another non-technical route, take the Boe gondola from Corvara then jump on the Vallon chairlift and before you know it you’ll be enjoying 360 degree views and gentle walking trails in the sunshine. The gondola system in the area is fantastic if you're exploring with children. It means you can experience the incredible views without putting too much strain on little legs!

Whether it’s on an electric, mountain or road bike, you'll be in good company around Corvara

In the summer months, the whole area goes crazy for biking - with over 350 routes to choose from. Hire a bike and head out, whether it's cruising along a gentle cycle path in the valley with children, or jumping on a lift to enjoy the thrill of downhill mountain biking (teens will love it!). Keen road bikers should grab an e-bike (yes, you’ll need the battery boost) and ride around the famous Sella Ronda. Though it’s not particularly long - around 65 kilometres - there’s a huge amount of up-and-down (almost 2,000 metres in altitude); it’s a bucket list cycle for good reason!
