When it comes to character and style, it’s hard to beat Viareggio’s Plaza e De Russie. You may not initially realise due to its sleek remodelling, but it’s the oldest hotel in town – built right on the coast in 1871 along the route of the Grand Tour, making it the perfect meeting place for high society, artists, poets and writers alike.

It’s known for exceptionally high levels of service and friendly staff who go out of their way to make sure each stay here is special. Inside the hotel it’s modern and elegant - it and oozes cosmopolitan charm. When it comes to the rooms, they’re distinctly Italian in design, each decorated individually with chic, modern furnishings, providing the ultimate comfort.

Foodies are in for a treat, especially if you upgrade to the half board option, as you’ll dine each evening in the glamorous Michelin Star Ristorante Lunasia. It’s open for lunch and dinner so you can also book your table in advance and pay locally. The food is all cooked under the guide and flair of Chef Luca Landi and the menu encapsulates the region with ingredients sourced locally and organically.

When you’re back from exploring Viarreggio, its beautiful coastline or nearby Tuscan towns why not head to the ultramodern cocktail bar in the lobby? Embrace La Dolce Vita with an aperitivo in hand.

Tuscany Coast

The Tuscany Coast has been a favoured Italian beach retreat since Roman times. But it really flourished in the early 20th century, when cities like Viareggio decorated the promenade with art deco beach clubs and art nouveau hotels.

Travel north from Viareggio, and you’ll come across Marina di Pietrasanta and its panoramic pier. Forte dei Marmi is right next door – a stylish beach town with sculpture parks and a summer fireworks festival.

Fancy exploring further afield? Fast trains zip from the Tuscany Coast to Pisa and Florence via the rolling Tuscan countryside.

Pools & Beaches

Whilst there is no pool onsite at Plaza e de Russie, the clear waters of Viareggio's coast are just meters away. Here you'll find golden sands sloping gently into blue flag certified seas and lots of bars and restaurants to keep you refreshed if you plan on making a day of it at the beach. Please note that most beaches in the Viareggio region charge a daily rate for entry and use of sun loungers and parasols. Hotel guests receive discounted access to the beach, payable locally.

There is a cycle path along the seafront connecting Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, and bikes can be hired locally. Water sports and activities like canoeing, sailing, surfing and windsurfing are all widely available along the Tuscan coast, as well as beach activities like volleyball and beach soccer. For those who like walking and hiking, there are some lovely trails through the pine woods behind the beaches. There are two golf courses, just a few minutes from the hotel. All activities are bookable and payable locally and the hotel staff will be on hand to help or make any recommendations.
