Information on ski lessons

Get your ski holiday off to the right start and pre-book your ski lessons with Inghams. Whether you are skiing for the first time or the hundredth, ski lessons help everyone to find their ski legs and improve their skills and confidence. Pre-book ski school for your holiday when you book with Inghams.

Why have ski lessons?

  • Even professional winter athletes have ski lessons (they call it training), so there’s nothing to be ashamed about when a ski instructor leads you down the piste. Inghams have been skiing for over 80 years, and even we have a tune-up with the instructor every so often! Improving your technique is a rewarding experience. We work with a range of excellent ski schools, all with English speaking instructors. No matter which ski resort you’re heading to, you know you can learn in confidence.
  • We don’t just offer ski lessons either. Snowboarding and cross-country skiing are both available to pre-book in selected ski resorts, and specialist instruction, such as off-piste ski lessons may be available locally.
  • Your ski holiday is an excellent opportunity to learn something new.

Beginner ski lessons

  • If this is your first ever skiing or snowboarding holiday, we strongly recommend pre-booking lessons. Ski lessons are important for first time skiers, it ensures you are using the correct technique on the mountain, and will be fantastic for your confidence. You will be surprised how quickly you progress.
  • We've created Learn to Ski Packs for selected ski resorts, which include everything you need as a first-time skier: lift pass*, skis, ski boots, and ski lessons. Designed for complete beginners, Learn to Ski Packs take the stress out of making sure you have everything you need for your first-ever ski holiday. *Lift pass is not included in all resorts, so you may not need it from day one. Please purchase it locally, following your instructor’s advice.

Beginner ski holiday top tips

The challenge of knowing when and where to go on your very first ski trip can be a scary and daunting one, but we have put together a few little useful tips to consider before booking your holiday:

  • Go outside of peak weeks (Christmas, New Year, February half-term, and Easter), when the slopes are less crowded and prices are generally lower.
  • Choose the right resort - the best resorts for beginners are those with a good selection of nursery slopes and blue pistes - often blues with a bit more of a gradient are better to learn to board. Check out our beginners guide for suggestions.
  • Book professional ski or board lessons in advance so you learn the right techniques from the start. It will get you off to a flying start and progressing correctly.
  • Hire rather than buy skis and boots. Buying your own kit can be an expensive, especially when you're just starting out. Hire equipment is an affordable solution and you can change your kit in resort if it doesn't suit you. It will also give you more knowledge of the equipment you like when you choose to buy your own.

How to book

  • Pre-booking your ski lessons through Inghams couldn’t be easier. You can add extras, such as ski lessons, onto your holiday at the time of booking, or through Manage My Booking. You can add ski extras at any time up to 3 days before your holiday.
  • Details of ski lesson prices are listed under the “Ski Extras” tab on your resort page.  Please be aware that any ski extra added to your booking will be priced at the time of the addition, not the time you confirmed your booking.
  • If none of the pre-bookable ski lessons we offer suit your needs or you need a different number of days of tuition, you can also book lessons with our in-resort representatives. Our representatives in resort will be on hand to supply you with your ski school vouchers, help make any additional arrangements, and guide you to the ski school meeting point.

Please note:

  • Your ski extras are bound by Inghams terms and conditions. The ski extra service is provided by a third party supplier and does not form part of your holiday package.

Ski essentials FAQ's

If you have never skied or snowboarded before, then yes you will need to arrange lessons. If you can link your turns and snow-ploughs, control your speed and come to a controlled stop, you have made it past the very beginner level. Whether or not you feel that you need lessons after that is up to you, but if you want to improve your technique and advance to more difficult pistes, it is advisable that you seek the help of a professional ski instructor before punching above your weight.

Some resorts have free lifts for beginners, but these are very short, slow lifts scattered across the base of the mountain and only access green runs. If you want to advance beyond the beginner lifts, you will need a lift pass.

If this is your first time, we advise you not to spent lots of money on brand new equipment. Amongst many reasons, as a beginner you might not fully know whether you’ll prefer skiing or snowboarding, and then you don’t want lots of non-returnable equipment on your hands! It is cheaper, easier and just as fun to rent your equipment in the resort and hand it back at the end of your trip.

You can rent skis, boots and poles for skiers. Boots and snowboards for snowboarders. Helmets are also available to rent and we recommend our guests to take this opportunity. There are three different grades of adult skis/boards available to rent: Blue, Red and Black, as explained in our guide. Check with your insurance policies before you rent the most expensive equipment there is (Black). All is explained in our handy Quick Guide: Ski and snowboard equipment explained (coming soon!).

You can add a ski carriage at time of booking. Booking in advance will help you secure the best possible price. On some flights, ski carriage is limited so we recommend booking as soon as possible. If you are travelling on one of our Jet2 charter flights, you can book ski carriage directly with Jet2 via their website. You will be asked for your Inghams reference number so make sure you have this to hand before booking. It’s important to note that ski carriage will be slightly more expensive when booking via Jet2 and it can only be done 7 days after your booking is confirmed by Inghams.
