If you are looking for something a little different and out of the ordinary, you have to stay at the Hotel Grivola this winter. Throughout the property you'll find a range of work by artist Gabriele Maquignaz, everything from abstract art hanging on the walls to beautifully created sculptures dotted about the place, literally everywhere you look there's something to admire and we love the quirkiness throughout.

Rooms are really comfy, especially the beds and they have pretty much everything you need for an enjoyable stay. If however after a few days on the mountain you're feeling the body is in need of something a little extra, head down to the spa and enjoy a nice warming sauna to soothe out any aches and pains.

Located in the centre of Cervinia you have everything you need on your doorstep with great bars and cafes just around the corner. More importantly you are just 100 metres from the ski lifts, so you can be on the mountain in no time at all. It does also mean that if you get caught up in the après at the bottom of the slopes, you don't have far to go to get home. Once you've popped your gear in the heated boot room, enjoy a drink at the bar before indulging in some local and international dishes served in the restaurant. Be sure to check out the wine line, the hotel quoting that "life is too short to drink mediocre wine" so you can be assured there are some great labels in the cellar.

Transfer time: Approx. 1 hour 45 minutes by coach from Turin airport.

Cervinia

As one of Europe’s highest ski resorts, great snow conditions and an impressive glacier come as standard. What truly makes this resort stand out is the towering site of the Matterhorn and just how close it is. That mixed with the rest of the incredible surrounding landscape and you have yourself the perfect setting for what is simply an amazing ski resort.

Cervinia is known for its extensive ski area and as you head up the mountain to the high peaks of the Plateau Rosa you will appreciate the impressive lift system which connects you to Valtournenche as well as the famous Swiss resort of Zermatt. Almost an endless network of runs means there is plenty of variety and places to explore as well as some superb off-piste. Being based on the Italian side of the mountain definitely has its benefits, what with great food, service full of Italian flair and let’s not forget it’s a lot cheaper than over the border with our Swiss friends. With an International ski pass you have the best of both worlds, so definitely worth it if you plan to get in the miles and want to explore the full area.

The village of Cervinia is a good size and there is lots to see and do. Along the font of the slopes you will find plenty of bars overlooking the piste, many serving lunch with an epic view of the Matterhorn. Later in the day the music is turned up and you have a great range of après bars to choose from. Further into town along the traffic free cobbled streets you will find plenty of shops to brows as well as some great hidden little pizzerias, perfect if you want a slice for lunch.

In and around the resort there is a massive selection of things to do. Rev up the engine and have a go at ice karting, take to the skies and feel the adrenaline of tandem paragliding, have a dip in the local pool or visit the highest ice grotto in Europe over on the Swiss side of the mountains – whatever you are after and whatever the age range, there is something for everyone in this smashing authentic Italian resort.
