An unspoiled winter wonderland with magnificent national park scenery

Lapland winter wonderland activity holidays in Ylläs

Ylläs combines all the ingredients necessary for a perfect Lapland experience. Guests return year after year to enjoy its stunning unspoiled natural scenery, Finland’s longest ski slopes, an excellent network of cross-country trails and superb choice of accommodation, including our best selection of idyllic high-quality log cabins. It offers a wide choice of activities and safaris, including exhilarating reindeer, husky and snowmobile safaris. The skies here are especially clear, ideal for witnessing the magical Northern Lights. The resort comprises two Lappish villages set 15 minutes apart connected by a resort shuttle bus: Äkäslompolo where Äkäs Hotel and some of our cabins are located, and Ylläsjärvi where the Ylläs Saaga Spa Hotel enjoys a panoramic slope side position. Just 10 minutes from Ylläsjärvi, we have introduced 12 beautiful cabins to our collection. Available for 7 nights only, these too are connected by the resort ski bus and enjoy a peaceful location.

Ylläs is a cross-country skier’s paradise. It has 330kms of trails  prepared for both classic and skating styles. 38kms of these are floodlit. Many of the tracks take you into the spectacular scenery of Pallas-Ylläs National Park where Lapland’s pristine nature is carefully preserved. The trails range in elevation between 190 and 540 metres, including so-called “warm tracks” where it might be as much as 15 degrees warmer than down in the village due to the temperature inversion. There is a wonderful variety of tracks for all skier levels which easily allow for routes to be lengthened or shortened according to how you feel during the day.

The area consists of seven fells, with Ylläs fell being one of the highest in Lapland at 718m, making it possible to ski a different route each day. In addition to countless circular routes, one-way trips can be made using taxis or the ski bus which runs regularly between the two villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. Guided trips can be arranged through ‘Seven Fells Up’, while Äkäslompolo SportShop in the village centre is an excellent local resource for nordic skiers. There is a network of 14 ski track cafés (some only open from mid-February), plus 25 campfire shelters where you can fry your own sausages like a true Finn.
