Beginner skiing in Ylläs

Ylläs is an excellent choice for beginners with wide, gentle slopes and a peaceful atmosphere that's ideal for learning. Both sides of the resort, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, have dedicated beginner areas with easy green and blue runs serviced by magic carpets and drag lifts. 

Ski tuition is available in to pre-book. The ski schools provide group lessons with small classes and English speaking instructors. Private tuition is also available.

Intermediate skiing in Ylläs

Ylläs is ideal for intermediates, with an excellent range of blue and red slopes through the treeline or on the open fellside - plus the floodlit slopes, mean you can extend your ski day, even when the sun has set.

Finland's longest slope - Jättipitkä can be found in Ylläs, the 3 kilometre long run is ideal for picking up speed and improving your technique. Wherever you are in the area, you'll be surrounded by incredible views of the snow covered trees as far as the eye can see.

Advanced skiing in Ylläs

While Finland isn't known for it's challenging slopes, there is a good selection of red and black runs including the Länsirinne and Saaga runs. The Jättipitkä run is a favourite amongst advanced skiers and boarders, as Finlands longest run you can pick up the speed and carve your way down to the bottom in no time.

The real appea is the off-piste and backcountry possibilities. Ylläs is known for its access to untouched powder through gentle ski-touring or by branching just off the marked pistes into the trees and open fell areas.

If you want to add some excitement to your ski day, make the most of the floodlit snow park with jumps, a super-pipe and boarder-cross course. 

Cross-country skiing in Ylläs

Ylläs is one of the best places in Lapland for cross-country skiing, offering an unmatched mix of scenery, variety, and convenience. With 330 kilometres of prepared trails, 38 kilometres of them floodlit, it caters to all abilities and both classic and skating styles. Many routes wind through the breathtaking Pallas-Ylläs National Park, where nature is pristine and peaceful. Trails range from 190 to 540 metres in elevation, including unique “warm tracks” where temperature inversions make skiing more comfortable. With seven fells, circular and one-way routes, regular ski buses, 14 ski cafés, and 25 campfire shelters, Ylläs promises a fresh adventure every day.

With a great selection of accommodation, including an excellent cosy, traditional log cabins - you'll be spoilt for choice here. The resort comprises two Lappish villages set about 15 minutes apart, connected by a resort ski bus. Äkäslompolo is the main village where we have a choice of hotels, apartments and log cabins, including the lovely Äkäs Apartments. Skiers and boarders looking for the best slope side position will love Ylläsjärvi where you'll find the Ylläs Saaga Spa Hotel and apartments in a panoramic slope-side position. On the shores of Ylläsjärvi, we have introduced the brand new Miilu Northern Lights Cabins to our collection - the perfect choice for Aurora hunters.

Ylläs ticks all the boxes for the ultimate ski adventure in Finland. Named after the Yllästunturi fell, the resort features cosy, comfortable accommodation in two main areas: Äkäslompolo to the north and Ylläsjärvi to the south, so you are within easy reach of the arctic ski slopes.

Known for its excellent snow conditions, reliable snowfall throughout the winter, and scenic surroundings, skiing in Ylläs is not to be missed.  With over 50 kilometres of slopes, there are pistes for skiers of all levels, from gentle beginner slopes to challenging runs for advanced skiers and snowboarders, making it the perfect spot for your next family ski holiday.

The season begins in late November when a small number of slopes open, with early skiing often taking place under floodlights during the magical polar night. From mid-February, as daylight returns, the full mountain opens up, offering varied terrain for all levels and spectacular views across the fells. With minimal lift queues and unspoiled surroundings, Ylläs offers a relaxed and authentic Lapland skiing experience.

The resort is also renowned for its long, well-groomed cross-country trails, which wind through frosty forests, past frozen lakes and over the snow-covered fells, offering a true Arctic skiing experience. 

 

Ylläs has a fantastic selection of restaurants, cafés, and bars, offering everything from cosy, traditional Finnish dishes to international favourites. In the villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, you’ll find welcoming restaurants serving hearty Lappish specialities such as reindeer, salmon, and game stews, often enjoyed by the glow of a log fire. There are also casual eateries for pizza, burgers, and comforting après-ski meals, as well as stylish venues with carefully curated wine lists and local craft beers. For a true Arctic experience, some restaurants are set in wilderness huts or reached by snowmobile or skis, combining authentic flavours with a touch of adventure. Après-ski in Ylläs is relaxed and friendly, with laid-back bars and cafés perfect for winding down after a day on the slopes.

In both Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi you’ll find a mix of relaxed pubs and venues that sometimes have live music. Many serveFinnish craft beers and hot drinks with a Nordic twist. While the atmosphere is generally more chilled than in larger Alpine resorts, there are lively spots with DJs, dancing, and late-night entertainment if you’re looking for more energy. Whether you prefer a quiet drink in a rustic tavern or a fun night out with fellow skiers, Ylläs offers plenty of choice to round off your evening in true Lapland style.

Shopping in Ylläs is small-scale but charming, with a focus on local products and essentials for your stay. Both Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi have supermarkets and convenience stores for groceries and everyday items, as well as sports shops where you can rent or buy ski gear and winter clothing. You’ll also find boutiques and gift shops selling traditional Lappish crafts, reindeer hides, handmade jewellery, and souvenirs inspired by Sámi culture and the Arctic landscape. While Ylläs isn’t a destination for big-name shopping, it’s the perfect place to pick up unique, locally made items and practical gear for your adventures.

Ylläs is the perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes, with wellness and relaxation at the heart of the experience. Many hotels and cabins include private saunas, an essential part of Finnish culture. For those seeking more, the Äkäs Hotel in Äkäslompolo has a popular swimming pool complex that’s great for both families and adults looking to relax. Hunt for the magical Northern Lights on a thrilling snowmobile safari under the stars. The beautiful natural phenomenon is only visible on dark, clear nights – during the safari a guide will take you on an adventure to the best spot in Yllas to potentially catch a glimpse of them. You will stop to warm up with a drink beside an open fire, and listen to the guide telling ancient stories and beliefs of the Northern Lights before continuing on the hunt for the best show on earth. 

Duration: 2-2.5 hours (from Äkäslompolo)

  • All drivers must be aged 18 or over and must bring a full, valid photographic driving licence to the excursion. Snowmobiling is a physically demanding activity, so participants should have a reasonable level of fitness to take part.
  • Children must be aged 13 years or above and at least 140cm tall to ride as a passenger on a snowmobile; they must be able to touch the footrest when sitting on the snowmobile.
  • It is not possible for children under 12 years to take part in this excursion. 
  • Single riders who have purchased a sharing snowmobile may be required to upgrade locally to a single-driving snowmobile if no sharing snowmobiles are available.

Step into a winter wonderland with a memorable reindeer safari and farm visit in the heart of Finnish Lapland. Glide through the snowy forest in a traditional reindeer-pulled sleigh, taking in the peaceful surroundings and magical Arctic scenery at a gentle pace — just as the Sámi people have done for generations.

Feel the thrill of the Arctic on an unforgettable husky safari through the snowy landscapes of Finnish Lapland. For this safari, you will drive the sleigh.

  • This is a self‑driven husky safari. Each husky team is usually shared by two adults or one adult and two children: one adult will drive the sleigh, and the other(s) will ride as a passenger
  • Guests must be at least 18 years old and in good physical condition to drive the sled. It is not possible to arrange for a guide to drive the sled.
  • This excursion is available for children aged 4–12 years.  Infants under 3 years are not permitted on this activity.
  • Single riders who have booked a sharing husky‑sled option may be required to upgrade locally to a single‑driver sled if no sharing sleds are available.

Step into the magical Lainio Snow Village, a true Arctic marvel made entirely out of snow and ice. Situated 200 km above the Arctic Circle, this extraordinary hotel is crafted each winter from over 400,000 kilos of ice and 45,000 cubic meters of snow. Every corner of the village is adorned with breathtaking carvings, from the beautifully designed rooms and courtyards to the mesmerising ice bar, restaurant, and Ice Chapel. With themes often inspired by Nordic mythology, the design changes every year, offering a unique experience for every visitor.

Snowshoeing in Ylläs offers a beautiful way to explore the breathtaking scenery in Finnish Lapland. Venture out into the pristine Arctic landscape on a guided snowshoe safari through the snow-covered forests. Halfway, you’ll stop for a warming berry juice in front of the fire, and as you explore the trails, your guide will tell stories about Lappish culture and the natural landscape that surrounds you. You may even encounter wildlife such as reindeer, arctic hares, and even the occasional fox or owl.

Speed across the specially designed ice track, surrounded by the stunning snow-covered landscapes of Levi. Whether you're a seasoned driver or a first-timer, ice karting offers an adrenaline-pumping challenge as you drift and race on the icy surface. Equipped with high-performance karts kitted out with studded tires and all the necessary safety gear, you'll race around the track feeling the adrenaline of winning the race.

As night falls over Ylläs, head out on a memorable evening journey by minivan in search of the Northern Lights. Accompanied by an expert local guide, you'll travel through snow laden forests and across frozen lakes, stopping at carefully chosen locations outside of Ylläs where the sky is at its clearest. Pause to gaze upwards as constellations sparkle in the crisp arctic air. With a little luck, the Northern Lights may appear, rippling across the sky in shades of green, purple, and pink, casting a magical glow over the winter landscape.

This is a group experience, travelling together with other guests, and it operates in all weather conditions.

Step out under the starry night sky and head out on a tranquil snowshoe safari around the southern tip of Äkäsjärvi Lake.
