Explore Lake Annecy

Tucked away in France’s Haute Savoie region, Lake Annecy’s clear, turquoise waters make a splash when it comes to summer activities. Boats launch off from the water’s edge transporting visitors and locals around the lake, whilst paddleboarders float and kayakers glide along the blue waters below.

A bike path drapes its way around the water’s edge connecting the many villages and viewpoints that are dotted around the lake, with plenty of opportunities to stop at boulangeries or grassy-banked beaches along the way.

Talloires is one of the many beautiful villages on Lake Annecy, secreted away in it’s own little bay with sun-drenched waters, cobble-stone streets and treelined paths – it’s no wonder artists and poets would journey here in search of beauty and inspiration back in the 18th century. Whilst cyclists circle the shoreline, hikers venture to the mountains surrounding the lake, taking on challenging ascents and seeking out rewarding views.

The walking around Lake Annecy is great for all abilities, with lake-level paths perfect for those after a more relaxed pace while the mountains behind the lake offer plenty of trails for those up to the challenge. Sat at the top of the lake you’ll find the small and charming city, Annecy. Its historic heart is made up of a network of canals that loop their way around medieval buildings and flower-lined walkways that burst into life in spring.

There’s a vibrant atmosphere as people duck in and out of cafes, restaurants and on certain days lively local markets line the city’s streets. Annecy’s castle keeps a watchful eye over the lake, one of the many historical sights to see in this city and those with a palette for the finer things will find the fine-dining opportunities are fantastic here.

Discover La Clusaz

Around an hour away from Lake Annecy you’ll find the small alpine village of La Clusaz sat snug amongst the Aravis mountain range. The church clock tower marks the village centre, standing above chalet-style buildings that filter out of the village and stack their way up the surrounding mountains.

La Clusaz offers plenty of French charm, with small, independent boulangeries, cafes and restaurants scattered around its centre, showcasing sweet treats as well as hearty Haute-Savoie cuisine. As with most French villages, food is a way of life here and the local cheese, Reblochon, which is made in the area, is deliciously creamy and easy to spot on most restaurant menus.

Whilst La Clusaz offers a quieter slice of the Alps when compared to some of it’s neighbouring towns, it’s not short on summer activities or things to do. During the summer, pine-trees shed their snowy coats and meadows fill with wildflowers revealing a network of walking trails leading to plenty of on foot adventures.

In the mountains, Alpine lakes fill with winters melted snow, the surrounding mountains often reflected in these still-waters, perfect for lake-side picnics in the crisp, mountain air.

Walking trails are generally quiet, unless you count the sound of distant cowbells and being in the Aravis mountains you’re in for some dramatic scenery. During certain months you’ll see snowy topped peaks and on a clear day some trails even enjoy distant views of the Mont Blanc.

The Beauregard gondola opens the Beauregard plateau, that sits above La Clusaz and is great for walking or strolling depending on how far you’re willing the venture. Besides walking you’ll also find plenty of bike paths to explore and several events and festivals throughout the season.
