Hotel Iseolago is the ultimate tranquil retreat. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens and only one kilometre from Lake Iseo. You can reach the lake by a private pathway that leads straight there from the hotel’s ground. The hotel has been renovated in recent years and is known for its relaxed and informal atmosphere. Expect a classic interior with flecks of gold and marble throughout the sprawling hallways and comfy rooms.

There are three pools to choose from here, including a little one for children. You’ll also have free entry into the nearby Sassabanek Lido (open mid May to mid September) when you stay here. It has three pools, a private beach and water sports, as well as a bar and restaurant. When you’re ready to indulge, the hotel's modern spa has lots of treatments on the menu (treatments are payable locally but entry to the spa is free).

We absolutely love the Iseolago’s a la carte restaurant. They serve lots of tasty local dishes including fish caught from the lake – best enjoyed with a chilled glass of local Franciacorta wine.

When it comes to exploring the area, the stunning Torbiere Nature Reserve is just 200 metres away and has over 3 square kilometres of natural clay ponds, wild flower fields and vast wildlife to discover. The town of Iseo is around a 15-minute walk away and is rich with character - browse the boutique shops or stop in a local restaurant. There's and some fantastic walks from here too, including the local Via Valeriana - one of the oldest and most picturesque walks in the region. The hotel shuttle runs regularly to the centre of Iseo if you don't fancy the walk back (payable locally).

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour 15 mins by coach from Verona airport.

Lake Iseo

Forget Prosecco, it’s all about Franciacorta DOCG sparkling wine on Lake Iseo! The Franciacorta region towards the south of the lake is marbled with family run vineyards, so you won’t struggle to find a beautiful spot to enjoy a glass yourself. There’s lots of great cycle routes in the area. Our favourites are the ‘wine routes’ – hire an e-bike and set off through the vineyards. You can even schedule in tastings as you go.

The main town of Iseo is on the lake’s south shore. You’ll get an instant feel for its medieval origins, from the street patterns, arcaded shopping areas and peaceful squares, centred around Piazza Garibaldi. Do as the locals do and head to the Friday market here or find a sunny terrace to sit at, outside a café. Lake Iseo’s most striking feature is Monte Isola, the largest inhabited lake island in Europe, home to eleven small communities and it's virtually traffic free, except for the public bus. We loved taking a stroll and finding local Trattoria’s to stop at for lunch - complete with red checked table cloths and delicious homemade food. Ferries run regularly from Iseo and Sulzano, so it’s easy to hop between the lake’s towns and the Island.

There’s some lovely gentle walks around, too. Like through the Torbiere del Sebino Natural Reserve beside Iseo town. The lakeside wetland is a mecca for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts – so don’t forget your binoculars!

Pools & Beaches

A 10,000 square metre park has three open air swimming pools. Around each pool there are plenty of sun loungers and parasols for you to use. Pool towels are provided free of charge. You can also use the facilities at the adjacent Sassabanek Lido free of charge, which has three pools, a private beach directly on the lake, tennis courts, five-a-side football pitches and water sports. There's also a bar and restaurant so you can happily spend all day relaxing here (the lido is normally open from mid May to mid September).

Le Ninfe del Lago spa, which translates to 'The Nympths of the Lake', is as enchanting as it sounds. This boutique area of the hotel has been designed to evoke feelings of rest and relaxation. The wellness centre is home to a hydro-massage tub, sauna, Turkish bath, tropical showers, fitness room and a relaxation area with free herbal teas. Entry to the spa and use of the facilities mentioned above is free of charge however any beauty treatments or massages must be booked and paid for locally.
