Ylläs is a cross-country skier’s paradise. It has 330kms of trails  prepared for both classic and skating styles. 38kms of these are floodlit. Many of the tracks take you into the spectacular scenery of Pallas-Ylläs National Park where Lapland’s pristine nature is carefully preserved. The trails range in elevation between 190 and 540 metres, including so-called “warm tracks” where it might be as much as 15 degrees warmer than down in the village due to the temperature inversion. There is a wonderful variety of tracks for all skier levels which easily allow for routes to be lengthened or shortened according to how you feel during the day.

The area consists of seven fells, with Ylläs fell being one of the highest in Lapland at 718m, making it possible to ski a different route each day. In addition to countless circular routes, one-way trips can be made using taxis or the ski bus which runs regularly between the two villages of Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi. Guided trips can be arranged through ‘Seven Fells Up’, while Äkäslompolo SportShop in the village centre is an excellent local resource for nordic skiers. There is a network of 14 ski track cafés (some only open from mid-February), plus 25 campfire shelters where you can fry your own sausages like a true Finn.

Ylläs Holiday FAQs

What makes Ylläs a popular destination in Lapland?

Ylläs is known for it's unspoiled natural beauty surrounded by the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Split into two areas either side of the Ylläs ski fell, Äkäslompolo (the main village) to the north and Ylläsjärvi to the south.

Are there ski-in/ski-out accommodations available in Ylläs?

The Saaga Hotel and Apartments are in a great location beside the Ylläsjärvi ski slopes. Our accommodations in Ylläs are located on either side of the ski fell, which can be reached using the local ski bus (payable locally). The main village of Äkäslompolo is to the North and Ylläsjärvi is to the South.

What winter sports can I enjoy in Ylläs?

You can try a range of winter sports in Ylläs - from skiing and snowboarding to exciting winter activities like husky sledding, reindeer safari and snowmobiling. Explore the trails of the National Park on cross-country skis, snow shoes or even by e-bike.

Can I visit Santa's workshop in Ylläs?

Yes, you can pre-book the Santa's Hideaway as an excursion. It's available for all arrivals before Christmas.

Are there any local cultural experiences to try in Ylläs?

Take a reindeer safari to meet and learn about the lives of local Sami people. The farm we visit has been in the same family for over 200 years and they have a personal Sami museum (7 night guests only). Check out the Yllastunturi Visitor Centre Kellokas to learn about the local flora and fauna and the life, history and traditions of villagers in the area. It also has an art gallery which hosts travelling art exhibitions of Finnish artists.
