Discover Saariselkä

Quieter and smaller than livelier Levi, Saariselkä has a charm all of its own. Head 260 kilometres above the Arctic Circle and you’ll find yourself surrounded by miles of Arctic wilderness.

And you’ll know it the moment you step outside. Pine trees are piled high with snow, the air is crisp and cold, and the sky can glow pink and purple above the fells. When night falls, keep an eye on the sky. Being this far north means you’ve got a good chance of spotting the Northern Lights too.

You’re also deep in Sámi country, where many of Lapland’s Indigenous people still live and work today. With fewer crowds and Arctic wilderness all around, you’ll feel right in the heart of Lapland’s magic.

Things to do in Saariselkä

Customise your Lapland Adventure holiday to Saariselkä by adding a range of exciting winter activities that will make your Lapland holiday complete. There will be plenty of opportunities for reindeer and husky safaris as well as snowmobiling, snow shoeing and even the opportunity to search for the Northern Lights.

Snowshoeing in Saariselkä is a wonderful way to discover the breathtaking scenery of Finnish Lapland. Set out on a guided snowshoe safari through snow-covered forests, immersing yourself in the untouched Arctic wilderness. Along the way, you'll stop for a warm berry juice by the fire, and as you traverse the trails, your guide will share stories about Lappish culture and the surrounding natural environment.

Equipped with snowshoes, you'll venture into the quiet, snow-covered wilderness, far from artificial lights, where the natural beauty of Finnish Lapland unfolds around you. With luck, you'll witness the sky come alive with dazzling displays of vibrant greens, pinks, and purples. Experience the thrill of driving through enchanted Finnish forests and fells on an exciting snowmobile safari. Before setting off on this unforgettable adventure across the pristine Arctic landscape, you’ll learn how to operate the snowmobile, and your guide will go through the trail rules. Children will ride in a sleigh behind the guide, while adults can share a snowmobile or can upgrade to drive solo.

Duration: 2 hours

Available to book from January onwards.

  • Lunch is included in this excursion.
  • All drivers must be aged 18 or over and must bring a full, valid photographic driving licence to the excursion. Snowmobiling is a physically demanding activity, so participants should have a reasonable level of fitness to take part.
  • Children must be aged 11 years or above and at least 140cm tall to ride as a passenger on a snowmobile; they must be able to comfortably reach the footrest while seated. Children under this height or aged 4-10 years will travel in a sled or pod towed behind the guide. Infants aged 0–3 years are unable to participate in this excursion.

Venture out into the remote areas surrounding Saariselkä for an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. As you whizz through the forests and over the fells, the magical Northern Lights may make an appearance, lighting the sky up in hues of purple, pink and green. Along the way, you'll stop at a traditional Finnish kota to warm up with berry juice before continuing your journey through the magical forests.

Husky Rides

Feel the thrill of adventure as you embark on a safari through the untouched wilderness of Lapland. After learning the basics of steering your own husky sled, you’ll head out onto the trail, led by an energetic team of huskies and surrounded by stunning Arctic landscapes. As you glide over the snow, take in sweeping views of frost-covered forests and endless tundra, where every turn reveals a scene straight out of a postcard.

After the safari, you’ll be taken to the farm for a visit, where you can meet the huskies up close and discover more about their daily lives. You’ll learn how they are cared for, trained, and prepared for life in the arctic. This is also a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, hear stories from experienced guides, and enjoy some quiet time with the dogs.

A quintessential part of your Lapland visit is to experience a reindeer sleigh ride. Visit an authentic reindeer farm and learn all about the reindeer. You will then be taken on a serene sleigh ride through snowy forests, guided by a Sami guide and their reindeer. The visit includes a farm visit where you can learn about the reindeer.

A visit to Lapland wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a reindeer sleigh ride. Begin your adventure at an authentic reindeer farm, where you’ll have the chance to meet these gentle arctic animals up close and learn about their importance in Sámi culture, history, and everyday life. Knowledgeable herders will share fascinating insights into the deep bond between the Sámi people and their reindeer, from traditional herding practices to the significance of reindeer in local folklore.

After your farm introduction, you’ll be taken on a sleigh ride through the frosty forests,  glide quietly across the winter landscape, led by a Sámi guide and their reindeer. The only sounds you’ll hear are the soft crunch of snow beneath the sleigh and the rhythmic steps of the reindeer.

Your excursion also includes a warming lunch at the Wilderness Restaurant and enjoy the local flavours that perfectly complement your arctic adventure.

Enjoy a delicious Lappish buffet dinner in the cosy Wilderness Restaurant and savour traditional dishes prepared over an open fire. You'll find dishes made with seasonal, local ingredients - often featuring local meats, fish and berries .  As you dine in the restaurant, your host will share insights into local Sámi culture, traditions and everyday life. You may even spot the Northern Lights dancing in the dark night sky.

Wilderness Dinner Buffet Menu

Arctic skiing and snowboarding in Saariselkä

Saariselkä is Europe’s northernmost ski resort, with plenty to explore on skis. Cross-country skiers have more than 200 kilometres of tracks to discover, including trails through the neighbouring national park. And with 34 kilometres illuminated, you can keep going even during the darker days of the polar night. Prefer downhill skiing or snowboarding? The slopes stretch across the Iisakkipää and Kaunispää fells and are particularly well suited to beginners and intermediates. The ski schools speak English, and all the slopes lead back to the same spot in the valley, so you can finish with a warm-up in the café or around the campfire.

Cross-country in Saariselkä

Saariselkä is one of Finnish Lapland’s top cross-country ski destinations - perfect for anyone wanting to experience the magic of the Arctic on skis. With 230 kilometres of expertly prepared trails for both classic and skating styles, and 34 kilometres illuminated for evening adventures, it’s ideal for all levels. Trails begin right in the village and lead into the stunning Urho Kekkonen National Park. Inghams offers excellent-value Learn to Cross-Country Ski packages for beginners. Expect scenic routes past husky farms, reindeer, and historic gold rush sites, plus warm cafés and wilderness shelters like Laanihovi, famous for its salmon soup and friendly atmosphere.

Ski Bus

A regular ski bus (pay locally) operates from outside all the hotels and runs to Laanila, Kakslauttanen Igloo Village and Kiilopää ski area, making it easy to do one-way trips as well as the many varied circular routes.

The ski lifts are 2 kilometres away from the village. The bus costs approximately €5 per day. Children under 6 years old travel free with an adult.

Where to stay in Saariselkä

We’ve got a range of hotels and apartments in Saariselkä, all within easy reach of the resort centre. Stay at the Holiday Club Hotel and you’ll be well placed for heading out on winter activities, as well as exploring the village. Or, take your stay a little higher. The Star Arctic Northern Lights Discovery and the Top Star Glass Cubes sit up on the fell, surrounded by snowy scenery. Away from the village lights, you’ll have a great chance of spotting the Northern Lights dancing overhead.

Direct exclusive flights to Kittilä airport depart on Sundays for 7 or 14 nights from:

  • London Gatwick

Flights to Ivalo airport depart on Mondays, and Fridays for 3 or 4 nights from:

  • London Gatwick (Direct)
  • Manchester (via Helsinki)
