Ratings/reviewsClick for full ratings

Hotel Simplon is on the edge of Lake Maggiore and very close to the centre of Baveno – a lovely little town with charming shops, bars and restaurants. Thanks to its centuries-old gardens, the whole place feels really secluded and very peaceful. There’s about 20,000 square metres of park to explore – ideal for a nice walk before dinner. There’s an outdoor pool here, which is a good size and has plenty of loungers and trees providing shade. You can also use the facilities at the Simplon’s sister hotel, Grand Hotel Dino. You can get there via the underground tunnel to use both the indoor and outdoor pools.

Hotel Simplon’s got a lovely feel inside with an art deco décor and traditional rooms with parquet floors. We recommend upgrading to a lake view and balcony room if you can. The restaurant looks out over the pool and gardens and the quality of food here is excellent. They use local ingredients and you’ll get a choice of courses for dinner. After you’ve finished your meal, head to the bar for a nightcap. It’s got a nice, relaxed feel and you can order some delicious local wines or cocktails.

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour by coach from Milan Malpensa airport.

Baveno

Baveno's a great base if you're looking to travel to Lake Maggiore's various towns and islands. It has a small harbour with a lake side promenade and bustling cafés. You won't beat Baveno for views of the Borromean Islands and there are regular ferries to Pallanza, Stresa and the islands.

What to see on a Baveno holiday

There are colourful flowers and oleander trees all over the town and it's full of parks and botanical gardens, ideal if you're looking for a relaxing holiday in the Italian sun. You could walk around all day and never get bored. After a day of walking we love sitting in a café by the lake with a board of local cured meat and cheese and a cold bottle of white wine, chatting and soaking up the atmosphere.

If you need a bit more adrenaline in you life then there's loads of water sports on the lake and Lake Maggiore's great for wind-surfing and water-skiing. This could be the perfect contrast to sightseeing and leisurely garden walks!

Things to Do

Things to See and Do

If you're into history, The Romanesque church of Baveno San Gervasio e Protasio's a must see. The church dates back to the 14th Century and was consecrated by the Viscount Guglielmo Amidano on 13 May 1343. You could also hop on a ferry and visit the Roman town of Pallanza; home to artefacts dating back to the 1st Century! It's crammed full of colourful period buildings and a Romanesque basilica, the Church of Madonna di Campagna, which has architectural features from the 16th Century.

A trip to Baveno wouldn't be complete without visiting at least one of the three Borromean Islands. The Isola Bella's the most famous island and was turned into an Italian terraced garden in the 17th Century by the Borromeo family. It's so beautiful that it's inspired writers and poets throughout time. Dickens wrote, "However fanciful and fantastic Isola Bella may be, and is, it is still beautiful". Isola Madre's the biggest island and has peacocks strutting around its' gardens. Check out the villa and its classic Italian style. The third island, Isola dei Pescatori is a lot more down to earth. It's an old fishing island and still is today. This is where Maggiore gets it's delicious fresh fish. It's easy to get to these islands on the ferry.

Food & Drink

Primi piatti tend to be pasta or risotto dishes (in true Italian style), but for secondi you have to try out the fresh fish straight from the Adriatic sea. Fish is a staple of the region and a delicious way to enjoy your evening meals. Cheese and cured meats are also fantastic in Lake Maggiore. They have the perfect mountain climate and conditions to raise healthy cattle. Try the local Mortadella dell'Ossola a speciality cured meat and the local Ossolana d'Alpe or Bettelmatt cheeses.

Activities

If you love the water then Baveno has a great lido for swimming or you could do some water sports on the lake. There's loads to do if you want an activity packed holiday! For the sightseeing part of your holiday you can't miss the Villa Fedora public park. Lake Maggiore's known for it's botanical gardens and the 18th Century Pallavicino park's no exception. It's a wildlife park and botanical garden and a great place to walk around and check out the exotic plants and the 50 species of mammals and birds that live there.
