About Gielas Hotel

The Gielas Hotel, located in the deluxe wing of the Tunturi Hotel, is an excellent high-end base for your Arctic ski holiday. After a day spent carving through the snow or exploring the wilderness, there’s nothing quite like returning and relaxing in your own private, cosy space. Each room features all the essential amenities you'll need on your trip, such as a private sauna to soothe tired muscles and a drying closet to warm socks and mittens for the next morning. Each room also includes a balcony with resort views, free Wi-Fi, and coffee-making facilities to help you gear up for first lifts.

The hotel’s amenities are centred around post-ski relaxation - You can curl up by the fire with a rich hot chocolate to recount the day's runs, or head over to the Bar & Grill Pirtti for a laid-back vibe. If you’re still buzzing from the fresh Arctic air, the live entertainment frequently hosted during the winter season is a great way to cap off your night. Gielas Hotel guests have breakfast and dinner in the main building of the Tunturi Hotel (approx. 100 metre walk).

Breakfast includes an extensive hot and cold buffet breakfast and evening meals include a three-course buffet dinner with a choice of main courses, including a vegetarian option, two desserts, soup, and a salad buffet.

For guests staying over Christmas and New Year, you can enjoy a buffet style meal with a seasonal menu, often featuring traditional Finnish dishes

Superior twin room sleeps two to four people, recommended for two adults and two children or three adults, and are around 30m².  These rooms have twin beds and an additional sofa bed for one adult or two children.

Single superior room offers sole occupancy of the twin room.

Kontio suites sleep two to four people and are around 30-49m². They have twin beds and a sofa bed (suitable for one adult or two children) in the lounge area. These modern suites have a sleek Scandinavian style and all have a private sauna. They're located in the Kontio building opposite the main restaurant.  

Please note that rooms are cleaned every day, apart from Sundays.

Annexes

Superior rooms are located in the Gielas wing of the Hotel Tunturi, approximately 100 metres from the main building. Kontio suites are located in the modern Kontio building opposite the main Hotel Tunturi building, where breakfast and evening meals are taken. The Gielas building with a bar and lounge area with a fireplace, is about 100 metres away.

Discover Saariselka

Located in the far north of Lapland, Saariselkä is home to the northernmost ski resort in Europe.  The downhill slopes stretch across the Lisakkipää Fell and Kaunispää Fell, offering a relaxed selection of gentle blue runs and flowing red pistes that wind down the open fell landscapes and snow laden trees. Each run gradually descends back towards the same base area making it easy for you to navigate the area. The terrain is particularly well suited to beginners and intermediate skiers, with wide open pistes that encourage steady progression and plenty of space to practise turns and techniques.

Snowshoeing in Saariselkä is a wonderful way to discover the breathtaking scenery of Finnish Lapland. Set out on a guided snowshoe safari through snow-covered forests, immersing yourself in the untouched Arctic wilderness. Along the way, you'll stop for a warm berry juice by the fire, and as you traverse the trails, your guide will share stories about Lappish culture and the surrounding natural environment.

Ice Activities

Equipped with snowshoes, you'll venture into the quiet, snow-covered wilderness, far from artificial lights, where the natural beauty of Finnish Lapland unfolds around you. With luck, you'll witness the sky come alive with dazzling displays of vibrant greens, pinks, and purples. Experience the thrill of driving through enchanted Finnish forests and fells on an exciting snowmobile safari. Before setting off on this unforgettable adventure across the pristine Arctic landscape, you’ll learn how to operate the snowmobile, and your guide will go through the trail rules. Children will ride in a sleigh behind the guide, while adults can share a snowmobile or can upgrade to drive solo.

Duration: 2 hours

Available to book from January onwards.

  • All drivers must be aged 18 or over and must bring a full, valid photographic driving licence to the excursion. Snowmobiling is a physically demanding activity, so participants should have a reasonable level of fitness to take part.
  • Children must be aged 11 years or above and at least 140cm tall to ride as a passenger on a snowmobile; they must be able to comfortably reach the footrest while seated. Children under this height or aged 4-10 years will travel in a sled or pod towed behind the guide. Infants aged 0–3 years are unable to participate in this excursion.
  • Single riders who have purchased a sharing snowmobile may be required to upgrade locally to a single-driving snowmobile if no sharing snowmobiles are available.
Snowmobiles

Venture out into the remote areas surrounding Saariselkä for an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. As you whizz through the forests and over the fells, the magical Northern Lights may make an appearance, lighting the sky up in hues of purple, pink and green. Children will ride in a sleigh behind the guide, while adults can share a snowmobile or can upgrade to drive solo. Along the way, you'll stop at a traditional Finnish kota to warm up with berry juice before continuing your journey through the magical forests.

Husky Rides

A quintessential part of your Lapland visit is to experience a reindeer sleigh ride. Visit an authentic reindeer farm and learn all about the reindeer. You will then be taken on a serene sleigh ride through snowy forests, guided by a Sami guide and their reindeer. The visit includes a farm visit where you can learn about the reindeer.

Enjoy a delicious Lappish buffet dinner in the cosy Wilderness Restaurant and savour traditional dishes prepared over an open fire. You'll find dishes made with seasonal, local ingredients - often featuring local meats, fish and berries .  As you dine in the restaurant, your host will share insights into local Sámi culture, traditions and everyday life. You may even spot the Northern Lights dancing in the dark night sky.

Wilderness Dinner Buffet Menu
