Walking in Westendorf

Walks and hikes

Walking Trails:
800km
Terrain:
Rolling hills and wide valleys with some steeper routes

This patch of the Alps offers every flavour of footpath for an invigorating walking holiday for hikers of all abilities. In Westendorf alone, there are over 200 kilometres of perfectly tended and signposted hiking trails to explore with around 800 kilometres in the wider region which is easily accessible thanks to the fantastic bus, train and lift network. Walk across lush pastures and gentle grass mountains to rustic alpine huts where the traditional culinary delights await - ideal for the gourmet hiker! The views are spectacular at every turn, and some of area's trails have earned the Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality which recognises outstanding walking.

The Westendorf Wellbeing Trail ambles by dappled forest glades and rivers. For a longer stroll, walk over wooden bridges and past waterfalls to neighbouring Hopfgarten – a market town and gateway to Hohe Salve’s mountain trails. The Windau Valley carves its way south from Westendorf, steering cyclists and hikers to green riverside paths, while more challenging routes scale the local mountain of Nachtsöllberg via pretty alpine mountain huts. Fancy saving your energy? The Alpenrosen cable car takes out much of the leg work in reaching the Nachtsöllberg summit, and the Brixen lift rises from Brixen village into the Bergwelt, where trails lead in all directions.

The Hiking and Stamp Book serve as an inspiration and motivation to go hiking in the mountains and you can collect points at most summits and at many of the mountain huts along the routes. Earn enough points and you can collect hiking pins from the Tourist Office.

Westendorf Tourist Office offers a varied programme of guided walks (some supplements apply) for all abilities, enabling you to discover some of Westendorf's most scenic spots with a guide, learning fascinating information about the area along the way (book directly with the tourist office).

There are two full-day walks per week in Kitzbühel, just for Inghams guests and when you stay in Westendorf it's easy for you to join. Join a small group and be led by a professional walking guide on some of their favourite trails. It’s a great way to get to know the area. The walks in Kitzbühel are run by David Hechl.

In Summer 25, they're available from 26 May - 12 Sep. Walks will run on Mondays and either Thursdays or Fridays - please see the dates by the walk descriptions below. You can add the walks onto your holiday at the time of booking, through My Booking or by giving us a call.

Please note: the walks all take place in or around Kitzbühel, and you'll need to make your own way to and from the starting point (usually by train), which will be advised by your Destination Expert.

Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Walks depend on weather, guide availability, and group size, and routes may change. Details are provided on arrival, and some may include a small local transport fee. Walks are not suitable for under 12s (under 18s must be with an adult). Please ensure the walk is right for you, our guides have the final say. See our booking conditions for full details.

Our favourite self-guided walks in Westendorf

  • Grade: Moderate
  • Distance:  9.6 km
  • Walking time: 5 hours
  • Terrain: Forest roads, mountain path (rocks, roots), water stream crossings

A forested loop that follows a varied trail past a series of small waterfalls and clear streams. The route begins at the Alpenrosenbahn middle station and winds downhill before climbing through woodland and open clearings to Fleidingalm. From here, you can continue on a rockier alpine stretch to the summit station or return via a gentler track. Expect plenty of variety in both terrain and scenery, with a good mix of short climbs and easy stretches.

  • Grade: Easy
  • Distance: 6.5 km
  • Walking time: 4 hours
  • Terrain: Gravel road

Starting from Ehrenbachhöhe, this route leads across open meadows and past quiet lakes to the Hochbrunn Inn. After a stop here, the trail climbs steadily to Jufenalm and continues to the summit of Pengelstein, where the views stretch across the surrounding peaks. The path is well-maintained throughout, with steady elevation gain. You can extend the hike to the Hahnenkammbahn upper station, adding more expansive viewpoints and a chance to visit additional mountain huts.

  • Grade: Challenging
  • Distance: 15 km
  • Walking time: 7 hours
  • Terrain: Mountain path with rugged and rocky surface

A long, challenging trail for confident hikers. Starting from Baumgartenalm, the route climbs steadily through rugged alpine terrain to the Kröndlhorn summit at 2,444 metres. A small chapel marks the peak, with panoramic views across the Kitzbühel Alps. The descent passes Reinkarsee, a quiet mountain lake, before continuing through forest to the Krumbach car park. A full-day hike that rewards persistence with dramatic views and a real sense of the mountains' vastness.

Our accommodations in Westendorf

Discover Westendorf

  • Wander through lush meadows and forests that lead to breath-taking mountain peaks
  • Explore the charming, traditional village centre with its quaint streets and alpine atmosphere
  • Experience a classic brass band concert at the bandstand, filling the air with lively Tyrolean tunes

On a sunny plateau in the Brixen Valley, Westendorf is surrounded by patchwork fields, forests, rolling hills and mountain peaks making it the ideal spot for a summer holiday. Buses, trains, gondolas and a network of walking and cycling paths link it to popular villages such as Söll, Ellmau and Kitzbühel. The Austrian Hiking Seal of Quality glimmers on many a trail too, so expect superbly signposted and maintained routes. On bright days, the village basks in full sunshine – ideal for kicking back with a schnapps on a mountain-view terrace.

Both villagers and visitors wholeheartedly embrace summer in Westendorf, taking to the café terraces with plates of schnitzel, alpine ales and herby lemonades. In fact, the whole town seems to burst into flower, with streets that once won gold as Europe’s most beautiful village in bloom. Even the St. Nicholas church is painted a cheery buttercup-yellow; the dome has watched over the village for centuries. Don’t miss the weekly market, where local craftspeople set out stalls piled high with hand-knitted gloves, truffle cheeses, wooden bird houses and bottles of berry schnapps. In high season, there's weekly brass band concerts or Tyrolean evenings, too.

Family activities in Westendorf come with a side of mountain views. The swimming pool is open-air, enclosed in gardens and views of the Kitzbühel Alps. Meanwhile, the Alpenrosen cable car takes families to the Alpinolino playground, where kids can put on their detective hats while learning about the animals and wildflowers of the Alps. Catch the gondola from neighbouring Brixen for the Filzalm Lake – a sky-high picnic spot with play areas and wildlife hides.

Take a day trip to Kitzbühel, Ellmau or Söll where you will find plenty of other family attractions like mountain playgrounds, fun parks and larger lakes full of optional activities to keep the little ones entertained.

Being part of the Kitzbüheler Alps, Westendorf has many places to go and activities to do nearby. Trains depart like clockwork from the station, about a 10-minute walk away from the village centre. You can visit the Schnapps distillery in St. Johann, local cheesemaking farms and even a 100-year-old farmhouse. Or, the swish summer resort of Kitzbühel is only a 15-minute trundle along the valley and you can also swap the mountains for Munich in just two hours. This Bavarian city might be best known for Oktoberfest, but there’s also an old town with a turreted city hall straight out of a Brothers Grimm tale.

If you're keen to discover more of the area, our varied excursion program offers trips to Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, and Grossglockner. Plus, you can experience some local treasures on the Taste of Tyrol trip.

The start points of many walks are easily reached on foot from Westendorf and the neighbouring village of Brixen is only a short walk away. For exploring high into the mountains and further afield, there is a superb network of chairlifts and gondolas, buses and trains in the valley making access to summits and linking walks very easy.
