Walks and hikes

Walking Trails:
500km
Terrain:
Diverse mountainous terrain with Alpine meadows, forests, rocky trails and rugged mountains

With over 500 kilometres of marked trails and breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, Mürren is an ideal base for outdoor adventure. From this charming alpine village, walkers can enjoy everything from gentle valley strolls to more challenging hikes, all while surrounded by pristine nature and untouched mountain villages. The Jungfrau region offers a variety of scenic routes, whether you're wandering through meadows, forests, or climbing towards dramatic peaks.

Down in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, explore a landscape shaped by water and time. Walk between the villages of Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg and count some of the valley's 72 waterfalls—including the iconic Staubbach Falls, plunging nearly 300 metres from towering cliffs. For a more dramatic experience, visit Trümmelbach Falls, a series of ten glacial cascades hidden within the mountain itself. Back above in Mürren, choose between leisurely paths like the flower-filled Allmendhubel trail or more adventurous routes such as the panoramic Northface Trail, a circular hike starting at the Schilthornbahn.

Embark on an unforgettable family adventure in Mürren with exciting trails perfect for young explorers. Your journey begins with a scenic ride by gondola and post bus to Lauterbrunnen via Stechelberg, setting the stage for the Detective Trail. Armed with a booklet of 16 clever puzzles, your mission is to unravel clues hidden along a gentle 2.5-hour hike from Grütschalp to Mürren, passing through Winteregg. As you walk, laugh, and think together, every step brings you closer to the final prize, hidden inside a secret treasure chest.

For a more playful descent, the Adventure Trail offers a whimsical route down Allmendhubel hill. Children can crawl through log tunnels, zip down colorful slides, and balance along beams, turning a simple hike into a joyful obstacle course. Who needs a lift when the journey down is this much fun?

Our accommodations in Murren

Discover Murren

  • Take the lifts up to Schilthorn for lunch with a view in the revolving restaurant
  • Stroll through the 'chocolate-box' villages of Mürren and Gimmelwald
  • Count the waterfalls as you wander along the Lauterbrunnen valley

A dramatic entrance is guaranteed in Mürren. There are only two ways in, aboard a funicular and mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen or by a cable car that climbs past waterfalls from Stechelberg and up to the village’s picturesque and car-free streets. Here, in the heart of the Jungfrau region, there are views of the mighty peaks and glaciers of the 4,000 metre-plus mountains of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The rugged scenery and picture-perfect alpine meadows and plateaus are spectacular walking territory, with over 200 kilometres of marked trails – just remember to make time for the village too. Mürren was founded by Walser people from Valais, who brought their own architectural style, dialect and recipes with them.

A cable car sweeps from Mürren to Schilthorn, known to James Bond aficionados as the home of the famous revolving restaurant of Piz Gloria. A spy museum reveals the secrets and challenges of filming on this 2,970 metre mountaintop. Of course, there’s life beyond Bond, including a glass-balconied Skywalk and a Thrill Walk from the gondola station at Birg. That one does exactly what it says on the tin, lining up vertiginous steel walkways and bridges that cling to the cliff.

Mürren is made for wandering, neatly tucking wooden chalets, viewpoints and pedestrianised streets onto a sky-high green terrace. The serene village, is in the perfect location - with stunning views of the three iconic peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. There is an abundance of pretty flower-bedecked balconies, little shops and cafés that line the streets. In the evenings, you can experience folklore events and traditional Swiss music.

Head to Lauterbrunnen, where you can discover the museum of local history, geology, and mountaineering. Or, venture further to the Jungfraujoch - here, trains take you on one of the most scenic journeys in the world, chugging from the pastures of the Bernese Oberland to the highest railway station in Europe, where you can pass through the multimedia experience tour, taking you back through the history of over 100 years of the Jungfrau railway.

There’s a wide range of excursions to enjoy in the region, from visiting the Jungfraujoch and exploring the alpine gardens at Schynige Platte to discovering the dramatic Trümmelbach Waterfalls. On your way down to the valley, stop by the peaceful village of Gimmelwald to see the historic sawmill and traditional cattle and cheese farms. Don’t miss the charming little unstaffed shop, and be sure to visit the award-winning Schwarz Mönch brewery pub while you’re there.

For a change of pace, take a day trip to Interlaken, where land and water activities abound. Enjoy a gentle cruise on Lake Thun, a refreshing swim or kayak on Lake Brienz, or indulge your sweet tooth with a visit to the Funky Chocolate Club to create your own chocolate bars.

Thanks to the region’s excellent network of aerial cableways and mountain railways, getting to nearby towns and villages like Stechelberg and Gimmelwald is easy and even more affordable with your included Swiss Half Fare Card. You’ll also have quick access to hiking hubs and panoramic peaks such as the Schilthorn, Grütschalp, and down to Lauterbrunnen and beyond.

Mountain parks, playgrounds and picnic spots are sprinkled throughout the Jungfrau region. The Flower Park at the top of Allmendhubel is a favourite with families staying in Mürren. There are slides, zip lines and a neighbouring restaurant serving up Bernese specialities like steak with garlic butter, rösti and cheese fondue made for sharing. Or you can just sip a rosehip tea while taking in the view. Swap the mountain lift for the Children’s Adventure Trail on the way back to Mürren; it leads kids through a series of woodland slides, walkways and rope swings.

If you have thrill-seeking children, then a day trip to Grindelwald First is fantastic for its adventure activities – including giant zip lines, a daring cliff walk and speedy mountain cart rides. The fun doesn't stop there, head to the Pfingstegg lift and zoom down the summer toboggan too.

From mountain huts to alpine restaurants, or simple cafés and bars – you will not go hungry here. The popular Winteregg restaurant has a sun terrace, perfect for a refreshing Rivella – Switzerland's favourite soft drink. You will also love the revolving restaurant up the Schilthorn, serving an incredible brunch.

Mürren and the entire Bernese Oberland has a great network of public transport and lifts that make getting around the area really easy.
