The Grand Hotel Bristol started life as the home of an 18th Century nobleman so you know it’s going to be something special when you stay here. The art deco building is on Stresa’s lakefront promenade and opulence runs throughout it - from the stained-glass ceilings in the lobby to the elegantly-designed rooms. We recommend upgrading to a lake view room so you can sit out on the balcony and enjoy the views all day.

There’s a lovely pool outside that’s surrounded by gardens and is a great place to sit back and enjoy the warm weather. You’ll get hints of rosemary and jasmine as you relax next to the Mediterranean plants. There’s a further pool inside that you can use for free. When you’re ready to get out and explore, the centre of Stresa is a short walk away and the ferry port is only ten minutes’ away. The Borromean Islands are just over the water and make for a great day out – explore the botanic gardens and palatial villas. If you fancy eating dinner in the hotel you can expect traditional Italian cuisine and views over the island from the lovely terrace. It’s a lovely place to enjoy a leisurely dinner with a glass or two of wine.

Transfer time: approx. 1 hour by coach from Milan Malpensa airport.

Stresa

Stresa's Lake Maggiore's most popular resort. It's the kind of place that you never forget, and perfect for making memories. The Borromean Islands are only a short boat ride away and you're not far from Monte Mottarone, known for its incredible views.

What to see on a Stresa holiday

The gardens of Villa Pallavicino and Villa Taranto are well worth a visit. You'll love the flower-filled gardens and there's nothing nicer than going for an evening stroll down the lakeside promenade. It's easy to get from place to place on the ferry which links you to the islands and nearby resorts.

The old town centre has been partly pedestrianised and in the evenings the bars and restaurants are full of life and a great place to celebrate your holiday. There are also loads of up-market shops to enjoy. Our favourite thing about Stresa is the music- we've got to mention the classical music festival which takes place from July to September each year.

Things to Do

Things to See and Do

A trip to Stresa wouldn't be complete without visiting at least one of the three Borromean Islands. The Isola Bella's the most famous island and was turned into an Italian terraced garden in the 17th Century by the Borromeo family. It's so beautiful that it's inspired writers and poets throughout time. Dickens wrote, "However fanciful and fantastic Isola Bella may be, and is, it is still beautiful". Isola Madre's the biggest island and has peacocks strutting around its' gardens. Check out the villa and its classic Italian style. The third island, Isola dei Pescatori is a lot more down to earth. It's an old fishing island and still is today. This is where Maggiore gets it's delicious fresh fish. It's easy to get to these islands on the ferry.

If you're looking for a day trip, you're only a stones throw away from Lake Orta, the famous UNESCO world heritage site. The smallest of the lakes, it's definitely worth a visit with it's relatively untouched landscape and fantastic food!

Food & Drink

The fish in Lake Maggiore's a must try, with the Isola dei Pescatori on your doorstep, you can have fresh fish everyday. Perch is very popular in the area and tends to be eaten in breaded filets, or if you're looking for something a bit more familiar, you could have trout which is typically served with home-made mayonnaise.

The cheese in Lake Maggiore's some of the best in Italy. It's on the border of Switzerland so both places share fantastic mountain land for raising cattle and making delicious cheese- they even produce one you'll definitely recognise... Gorgonzola. The local cured meats are also excellent and fantastic on an antipasto platter with the cheese. You have to try it!

Activities

Are you into watersports? Do you love hiking up to the best view-points? Then you'll never be bored in Stresa! Why not try out wake-boarding, water-skiing or paddle-boarding or you could hike the Chestnut Route (Sentiero dei Castagni) up Mount Mottarone which takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. The view from the top is unforgettable and on a clear day you can see seven of the Italian and Swiss lakes.

For a change of pace, in the Summer, from July to September Stresa hosts a classical music festival. It's a great chance to take in that Romantic Italian atmosphere.
