In the Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland, this Alpine lake is 17 km long and 3 km wide. A Lake Thun holiday offers you turquoise waters, charming lakeside villages, castles rich in history, rustic mountain farming villages and snow-capped mountains. As with all holidays on the Swiss lakes, a gentle cruise or two on a lake steamer is absolutely essential. The busiest towns are Thun and Interlaken at opposite ends of the lake. Charming Hilterfingen is a small village enjoying a beautiful setting on the northern part of the lake in between Thun and Oberhofen whilst peaceful Merligen is quieter with a few shops and cafes. Both have easy access by bus to the surrounding areas and lake steamers stop regularly for visits to other areas. On your holiday in Lake Thun you will be spoilt for choice for activities, day excursions and walking possibilities.

Where to stay

Merligen lies on the serene Lake Thun, with the old town of Thun and its proud castle at one end, and Interlaken, with its glorious views of the Jungfrau, at the other. Lake steamers stopping close to the Hotel Beatus regularly visit all the charming lakeside villages, and provide a delightful way of exploring the area.
