Beginners skiing in Sauze d'Oulx
Beginners should consider signing up to ski school before venturing onto the slopes. Sportinia is home to the ski school meeting point, and the sunny, sheltered nursery slope here is perfect for complete beginners.
After just a few days of tuition, Blue runs 12 and 13 above the beginner area are wide and forgiving, ideal for practising turns and building confidence. By the end of the week, if you feel ready, there are red routes back into Sauze. Red 30, from the top of the Sportinia chair to the base of the Clotes lift, offers a rewarding challenge for those ready to step it up.
Intermediates skiing in Sauze d'Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx is excellent for intermediates, with a wide variety of cruising terrain ideal for improving technique. The area’s flowing pistes and reliable snow conditions also make it a popular spot for snowboarders. Head up towards Moncrons for quieter red runs and stunning views.
Intermediate skiers can explore extensively, with varied terrain both above and below the treeline. Clotes, Sportinia and Genevris are all easily accessed via linked lifts. From Sauze, it's simple to ski over to Sestriere and enjoy the more open runs of Sansicario.
Day-tripping to Montgenèvre, just across the French border, is a great experience. It’s part of the same Milky Way ski area, and your lift pass typically includes two days’ access there — ideal for a change of scenery.
Advanced skiing in Sauze d'Oulx
Our favourite run is the Olimpica. Take the Fraiteve chairlift to the top, then follow a mix of red and black pistes all the way into Sansicario village. It’s a long, demanding descent that really tests your stamina.
Another must-ski is run 25, known as Rio Nero. This steep and narrow black piste demands control and confidence at the start, then opens out beneath the Colo chairlift — a great place to lay down some powerful, sweeping turns.
Advanced skiers should also explore neighbouring Sestriere, where the higher altitude guarantees excellent snow and a good choice of steep blacks and mogul fields.
Snowboarding in Sauze d'Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx is a top choice for snowboarders, offering a mix of tree-lined trails, wide open pistes, and natural features that make for an enjoyable and varied ride. The resort’s terrain is well suited to both beginners and experienced riders, with gentle runs for learning and steeper reds and blacks to challenge advanced boarders.
Freeride fans should head towards the Moncrons area, where the terrain is more rugged and powder conditions are often at their best. This section of the mountain is a local favourite for off-piste snowboarding, especially after fresh snowfall. Sauze doesn’t currently have a dedicated snow park, but the natural landscape offers side hits, drops and small features that freestyle riders can still enjoy.
Cross-country skiing in Sauze d'Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx also caters to Nordic ski fans, with over 25 kilometres of scenic cross-country trails. These routes are designed for a mix of ability levels, from relaxed loops for beginners to more demanding tracks suited to experienced cross-country skiers.
Most of the trails are located in the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand nature reserve, just a short distance from Sauze itself. This peaceful, protected woodland provides a stunning setting for classic or skate skiing, with well-groomed tracks winding through silent forests and open glades. It’s a fantastic way to take in the beauty of the area away from the busy downhill slopes.
