Ski Holidays to Zermatt

High on any skier's Top 10 list of world ski resorts

Even without its iconic Matterhorn, Zermatt would surely be one of the world’s top ski resorts. It has an excellent ski area at high-altitude, and the breath taking views of Europe’s most famous peak add an unbeatable and unique crowning glory. The village is car-free apart from electric cars and horse-drawn carriages. Just off the bustling Bahnhofstrasse you'll find quaint little streets, elegant boutiques, cosy bars and mouth-watering chocolate shops.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Zermatt

With direct access to the slopes in either direction from the village centre - you'll be on the mountain in no time! Travel via cable car, funicular or the famous Gornergrat mountain railway, which takes you on a spectacular ride up to 3089 metres, where you'll have the best views of the Gorner glacier. To reach the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, take the final stage of the 3S Gondola to Europe's highest mountain station at Klein Matterhorn 3883 metres. From the top, you can choose to ski over to Zermatt’s Italian neighbour, Cervinia, for the day on the International lift pass. If you're up for a challenge take on the Matterhorn Ski Safari - attempt to cover 10,000 – 12,000 metres of altitude without skiing the same slope or taking the same lift twice.

The new Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, opening in 2023, completes the continuous cable car link between Switzerland and Italy making it possible for non-skiers to travel between the two countries, as well as skiers in the winter.

Beginners skiing in Zermatt

Zermatt is perfect for families and beginners as there are three main ‘Learning Zones’ which often have 'slow pistes' nearby. A popular spot is the Sunnegga area, home to ‘Wolli’s Park’ a sunny and sheltered ski area served by five magic carpet.

Intermediates skiing in Zermatt

The long and diverse runs in all areas make Zermatt a heaven for intermediates. With a range of blue and red runs, the Sunnegga area is the greatest place to start developing your skills. Have your camera ready for the amazing views as you head up to the Gornegrat area for wide and gentle blue runs and a variety of red slopes. Test out your skills on The White Hare slope, which includes open areas, rollers, and short traverses.

Advanced skiing in Zermatt

The National Piste in Sunnegga, which once hosted the Swiss Championships, it remains a well-known route due to its difficult terrain and steepness. The Hirli black run in Schwarzsee is undoubtedly one of Zermatt's most challenging slopes due to its steepness. This is a great warm-up before you put yourself to the test on the tree-lined runs towards Furi.

If you are after some off piste skiing then look no further, Zermatt has a number of yellow unpisted and unpatrolled slopes. Take care when going off piste, we recommend hiring a guide to show you the highlights of the area.

Snowboarding in Zermatt

Since the slopes are rather gentle and consistent, the ski area on the Gornergrat offers wide blue runs that are suited to beginner and intermediate snowboarders.

The slopes on the Klein Matterhorn's side are excellent for cruising, and anyone seeking to get some distance will be able to travel into Italy and back without ever taking the same run twice.

Snow Parks in Zermatt

For the freestyle enthusiasts there is the re-designed 'Gravity Park' above Trockener Steg with jumps, rails and a pipe.

If you are heading over to Cervinia for the day test your skills at the Indianpark Snowpark where there are a number of jumps, rails and boxes for various abilities.
