Bergen Norway Streets Around Bergen

We love Bergen as a walking destination. Surrounded by seven mountains and within easy reach of Norway’s spectacular fjords - including Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord – it’s an ideal base for exploring both city and nature. These iconic fjords are just a few hours away and well worth the trip.

Bergen is made for wandering. With efficient public transport and a compact, walkable centre, it’s easy to explore its waterfront cafés, leafy parks, and historic streets on foot.

As a certified Sustainable Destination, the city combines natural beauty with eco-conscious living. Find calm at Lille Lungegårdsvannet lake or soak up the charm in Bergen’s colourful neighbourhoods.

Exploring the mountains: Seven peaks of Bergen

Bergen Norway View From Mount Floyen

Bergen is known as "The City of Seven Mountains," and while the locals may argue over which one stands out, two mountains are worth your time.

First up is Mount Fløyen. A quick trip on the Fløibanen funicular takes you to the top in less than ten minutes, where you’re rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city, fjords, and surrounding peaks.

Once you're up there, there are trails to suit all levels of walkers, a café for a drink or snack, and a fun troll forest trail that’s perfect for families. If you’re feeling adventurous, skip the funicular on the way back and take the scenic forest trail down.

Then there’s Mount Ulriken, the highest of the seven. You can reach the summit by cable car or, for a real challenge, tackle over 1,300 stone steps.

From the top, you’ll find even more hiking trails, spectacular views, and a café with outdoor seating to enjoy the panorama. For the truly adventurous, the Ulriken-to-Fløyen hike is a full-day trek that will take you between the two peaks.

Bergen’s cultural side: History, art, and local Life

Bergen Norway Museum

Bergen’s cultural side is rich in history, art, and local life. For nature, visit Nygårdsparken, the botanical garden, and the natural history collections at the University Museum of Bergen.

Then there’s Bryggen Wharf, a true step back in time. Stroll through the colourful, leaning wooden houses of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the heart of trade between Norway and Europe. Now, it's a lively mix of artisan shops, galleries, and cosy cafés.

Wander through the narrow alleyways and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another era. The famous wooden buildings have likely graced your social media feed, but there’s more to Bryggen than meets the eye. While the tall wooden houses along the quayside are iconic, behind them lies a thriving artistic community.

As you explore, you’ll find more potters, jewellers, and textile artists, with their quirky shops tucked away in the alleys. Bryggen is a thriving, creative hub that’s been centuries in the making.

Bergen’s museums offer a journey through time, whether you’re drawn to medieval history, Viking sagas, or maritime adventures.

Start with the KODE Museums, a collection of galleries that range from Edvard Munch’s iconic art to contemporary pieces that will get you thinking. If you’re more into stepping back in time, the Gamle Bergen Museum is an open-air museum where actors bring Bergen’s 1800s streets to life, making the past feel like it’s right in front of you.

For those intrigued by the sea, the Bergen Maritime Museum delves into Norway’s rich seafaring history, with fascinating exhibits and intricate ship models that tell the story of the country’s maritime past.

Insider tip: grab the Bergen Card for discounts on museum tickets and public transport, saving you both time and money while you explore.

The city’s cosy charm extends to its food, with hearty Norwegian favourites like fish soup and stews served alongside the irresistible cinnamon buns in local bakeries. Whether strolling through its narrow streets or relaxing in a hillside café, Bergen promises a true taste of the fjords.
