Day 1: UK to Sardinia

Arrive on the beautiful Island ofSardinia. Your flight will land in Olbia Airport, once you’ve collected your luggage head to pick up your hire car. Set off on your Sardinian road trip. Depending on your arrival time you’ll have a few different options. You could start with a visit to Nuoro, the provincial capital that stands at the foot of Monte Ortobene. The town is an artistic and cultural hub, home to plenty of museums and galleries. Alternatively, a little further on you’ll find Orgosolo a town famed for its artistic murals. The craze was started by the art collective Dioniso in 1969 and today you’ll spot over 150 of them decorating the streets. Continue on through the rough limestone mountains of the Supramonte to the spring of Su Gologone. The natural waters have carved their way through the high walls of Dolomitic rock and created a network of underground channels. Take a moment to admire the colours of emerald, turquoise, deep blue as the fresh mineral water floods from this natural wonder. Your final stop will be your comfortable hotel in the Barbagia Area.

Day 2: Barbagia Area to Cagliari Area

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before taking an optional half day off-road excursion to the Supramonte area visiting Tiscali mount and a prehistoric village. Alternatively, drive south along the scenic road SS125. Enjoy incredible views of the Gulf of Orosei and Sardinia's eastern coast, making stops at villages and historical sites along the way. First stop off at the prehistoric village of Serra Orrios in Dorgali area to explore the underground trails of the Ispingoli grottes. Next port of call is the coastal town of Santa Maria Navarrese, where you’ll see the medieval church of Santa Maria. Finally meander your way to your accommodation in the Cagliari area.

Day 3: Cagliari Area

Today is dedicated to exploring Cagliari, Sardinia's capital city, with its impressive castle acropolis that towers above the rest of the city. Highlights include visiting the beautiful 13thCentury Cathedral, seeing the golden hued Royal Palace, climbing to the very top of the Torre dell’Elefante for views over the city and out to sea, feeling as though you’ve stepped back into the second century AD as you explore the roman amphitheatre and admiring the North African influenced domed Basilica of San Saturno. Before making your way back to the Cagliari Area head to the ancient city of Nora. It was the first Phoenician city in Sardinia and due to its geographical location, the port became a significant commercial crossroads. Immerse yourself in the history of this town and learn about how it flourished as you explore archaeological park of Pula.

Day 4: Cagliari Area to Oristano area

Continue your journey northward towards the UNESCO protected villages of Barumini and Villanovaforru, home to the impressive archaeological site of Su Nuraxi. Explore the archaeological museum to learn about the fascinating history of this complex, built by the Nuragic civilization, which dates back to the final Bronze Age. Drive on to your accommodation in the Oristano area.

Day 5: Oristano Area to Alghero Area

Visit the ancient city of Tharros, set out on a peninsula on Sardinia’s West coast. The city is home to another of Sardinia’s archaeological sites where you’ll have the chance to explore the remains of a village, complete with ancient palace, built by the Nuragic peoples. Drive on further up the coast to Bosa, a town set on the banks of the river Temo. Colourful houses line the river, drawing your eye up to the impressive medieval castle that towers over them. It’s worth the climb up to explore the 14thcentury structure adorned with beautiful frescoes. Take the scenic road SS292, stopping at quaint villages of Montresta, Monteleone Rocca Doria and Villanova along the way. End your journey at your hotel in the Alghero Area.

Day 6: Alghero Area to Costa Smeralda Area

After breakfast make your way into Alghero. Set on the seafront, this enchanting medieval city in Sardinia’s North West, in home to a bustling historical centre, packed cafes, bars, restaurants as well as fascinating history. Walk along the ancient sea walls, visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria and admire the gothic Palazzo d’Albis that flanks the bustling heart of the city, Piazza Civica. Hop aboard a boat to explore the largest marine caves in Italy, Grotte di Nettuno. In the afternoon, as you head in the direction of Olbia, stop off to see some of Sardinia’s beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture; the Basilica di Saccargia, Santa Maria del Regno church in Ardara and, finally, set on a volcanic hilltop, the Basilica di Sant'Antioco of Bisarcio. End today's drive at you accommodation in the Costa Smeralda area.

Day 7:Costa Smeralda Area

Choose how to spend your final day. You could spend it exploring the glamorous town of Porto Cervo or Porto Rotondo, take an excursion to the Caribbean like islands of La Maddalena and Caprera or just kick back and relax in the Sardinian sunshine, at the beach. Relax on your last night at your hotel in the Costa Smerelda area.

Day 8:Sardinia to UK 

On your final day say your farewells to the beautiful Italian island. Make your way to Olbia Airport to return your hire car and fly home.
