Day 1: UK to Sardinia

Arrive in Sardinia, landing at Olbia Airport. Collect your hire car and set off on your Sardinian road trip. If you have time today, start with a visit to Nuoro, the provincial capital at the base of Monte Ortobene. The town is an artistic and cultural hub, home to plenty of museums and galleries. A little further on you’ll find Orgosolo - the town famous for its artistic murals, started by the art collective Dioniso in 1969. Continue on through the rough limestone mountains to the natural springs at Su Gologone before you reach your hotel in the Barbagia Area.

Meals included: (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 2: Barbagia Area to Cagliari Area

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast. The hotel offers an optional half day off-road excursion to the Supramonte area to visit Mount Tiscali and a prehistoric village. Otherwise, drive south along the SS125 - the serpentine stretch of road weaves through the mountains. Take in incredible views of the Gulf of Orosei and Sardinia's eastern coast as you go. First stop off at the prehistoric village of Serra Orrios in Dorgali area to explore the underground trails of the Ispingoli grottes and then on to the coastal town of Santa Maria Navarrese – it’s a nice place for a dip in the sea!

Meals included: Breakfast, (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 3: Cagliari Area

This morning’s exploring the capital, Cagliari. Think espresso on the cobbled streets, feeling as though you’ve stepped back into the second century AD as you explore the Roman amphitheatre, popping in to the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Castello and gazing up at the gold hued Royal Palazzi. Our favourite place here is the Torre dell’Elefante – climb to the top for the best views across the city and out to sea. Later drive out to the Pula area to visit the ancient city of Nora – the first Phoenician city in Sardinia – to spend the afternoon uncovering the history at the archaeological park.

Meals included: Breakfast, (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 4: Cagliari Area to Oristano area

Continue your journey northward towards the UNESCO protected villages of Barumini and Villanovaforru, home to the impressive archaeological site of Su Nuraxi. Visit the museum here to learn about the fascinating history of the complex, built by the Nuragic civilization, which dates back to the final Bronze Age.

Meals included: Breakfast, (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 5: Oristano Area to Alghero Area

Visit the ancient city of Tharros, set out on a peninsula on Sardinia’s West coast. The city is home to another of Sardinia’s archaeological sites. You’ll have the chance to what remains, including an ancient palace, built by the Nuragic peoples. Drive on further up the coast to Bosa, a town on the banks of the river Temo. Colourful houses line the river, drawing your eye up to the impressive medieval castle that towers over them - It’s worth the climb up to visit it! Take the scenic route SS292, stopping to explore the villages of Montresta, Monteleone Rocca Doria and Villanova along the way.

Meals included: Breakfast, (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 6: Alghero Area to Costa Smeralda Area

After breakfast, make your way into Alghero. It’s right on the seafront, this enchanting historic centre of the medieval city has a real buzz about it - it’s packed with independent cafes, bars, restaurants. You can walk along the ancient sea walls, visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria and admire the gothic Palazzo d’Albis. We’d recommend hopping aboard a boat to visit the Grotte di Nettuno – the largest marine caves in Italy. Sardinia has lots of beautiful examples of Romanesque architecture; the Basilica di Saccargia, Santa Maria del Regno church in Ardara and, the Basilica di Sant'Antioco of Bisarcio, built on a volcanic hilltop. Stop off on your journey to see for yourself.

Meals included: Breakfast, (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 7: Costa Smeralda Area

Choose how to spend your final full day. Explore the glamorous town of Porto Cervo or Porto Rotondo, take an optional excursion to the Caribbean like islands of La Maddalena and Caprera or just kick back and relax in the Sardinian sunshine, at the beach.

Meals included: Breakfast, (Dinner if choosing half board)

Day 8: Sardinia to UK

Say your farewells to the beautiful Italian island. Make your way to Olbia Airport to return your hire car and fly home.
