Top 5 things to do in Kandersteg

Posted on June 29, 2015 in Inghams Lakes & Mountains Summer Destinations Switzerland by Kevin.Holland Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

1:  Lake Oeschinen

Take the cable-car from resort to this stunning lake above Kandersteg for great walking, a popular panoramic terrace restaurant and fabulous views. The lake is fed by the glacial brooks of the three-thousand-meter peaks of Blüemlisalp, Oeschinenhorn, Fründenhorn and Doldenhorn. Walking directly from the cable car to the lake will take about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can walk from the cable car via Läger to the lake and then take the direct trail back. This circular walk is suitable for everyone and takes approximately 1 hour. There are other walks which take longer if you’re a seasoned hiker!

2: Blausee Lake

Blausee is one of the best-known mountain lakes in Switzerland. The lake is a striking deep blue and the water is crystal clear. A rock slide created the lake and its surrounding landscape, which is now situated in the midst of a 20 hectare large nature park.

The lake is very accessible, with walking paths, picnic and bonfire spots. There is also an organic trout farm – if trout is on the menu this is where it was caught! Inghams guests receive free entry to the lake as an added bonus!

3: Mountain Trails

Kandersteg has a fantastic range of both walks and mountain trails and is a very popular resort for hikers. In resort you can purchase a regional pass from your representative which gives you access to two of the gondolas, most buses/trains in the Bernese Oberland, the boats on nearby Lake Thun, Brienz and other gondolas and funiculars in the Interlaken area which really opens up your hiking options. In Kandersteg itself there are some fantastic hikes around the 3 gondolas. Popular trails include the Gemmi Pass and the hikes up to and around the Selden area. There are also cycling and mountain bike trails if you want to mix it up a bit.

4: Adrenaline filled activity

If you want to try something different during your stay, and you’re feeling brave – then why not give one of these a go… Firstly there’s the popular Paragliding, which gives you beautiful views of the area, high ropes (fun for all the family!), via farrata (think rock climbing but with the added comfort of cables!), or if you want something slightly less heart-pumping then you have the fantastic summer sled run!

5: Swimming & Relaxation

If you’re looking for a little relaxation after all of this, then a day in the outdoor pool followed by a treat in Marmottes tea shop will be just up your street! The local outdoor swimming pool is heated and there is a pleasant grassy area to relax in. There is also a diving pool, a swimming channel with a jet stream and ‘whirlpool corner’. Marmottes tea shop has a large range of cakes and other goodies to please everyone! It has a terrace around the back, and a sizable seating area inside – so you can enjoy your purchase in any weather!
