Zermatt
The world’s biggest chocolate Matterhorn displayed at The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof.

Switzerland is probably best known for its cheese, watches and last but by no means least its chocolate – something that’s very dear to my heart.

What is it about Swiss chocolate that makes it taste so good? It’s so smooth and full of flavour. Probably due to the fact that it has a higher milk content than the chocolate you can buy in most shops in the UK.

A typical Konditorei in the Bahnhofstrasse.

Being a reasonable sized town Zermatt has a lot of Konditorei where you can buy bread, croissants and of course handmade chocolates. Many of these shops are located in the Bahnhofstrasse.

The colourful display of Lindt truffles – so difficult to choose what to buy.

Having been to Zermatt many times over the last 12 years my favourite shop for chocolate has to be the Lindt shop, again located in the Bahnhofstrasse. There are shelves of chocolate bars, packets of truffles and best of all a display of at least 15 different types of truffles in the centre of the shop. It’s a pick and mix where you can choose your own selection and pay by the weight. There are wonderful flavours including champagne, almond, vanilla and many more.

Finally, if you really want to go to town, go to the up-market Läderach shop opposite the train station. If you can’t afford to buy anything it’s well worth window shopping! As well as loose chocolates and bars there are big slabs of handmade chocolate in delicious flavours.

Wishing you a very happy New Year from Zermatt!
