Where Is This Legendary White Christmas?

As Bing Crosby once sang, ‘I’m dreaming of a white Christmas’.

In fact, what he actually sang was probably more along the lines of a ‘whiiiite Chrissstmasss’ but I defy each and every one of you to read that title without the jolting lilt of Bing’s dulcet tones and a warm fuzzy, yuletide feeling deep within your belly.

Whether or not we actually get one, and let’s face it 95% of the time, we don’t; the idea of Christmas is inextricably linked to that of a snowy wilderness in which we’re isolated from everything and everyone. So where is this mythical Christmas land I hear you cry!

…I’m sorry to say there isn’t one.

There isn’t one however, because there are hundreds, and whilst they’re perhaps a little further than heading across to the in-laws, they’re so worth the travel! And what’s more? There’ll be no one popping by to snaffle the strawberry creams from the quality street! Bliss…

Christmas 2015 at the Chalet de Verbier

These are just a couple of our favourite destinations from Christmases of old. Perhap’s we’ll see you in one of them this year…

What are the best bits about spending Christmas in the Mountains?

1. Being with the people you care about most.

2. The opportunity to snowboard/ski/do something different on Christmas day! And if you really want to wat

3. The picturesque scenery

What’s your favourite memory from Christmas overseas?

Sitting down to an amazing Christmas dinner that I played absolutely no hand in! (Probably for the best..)

Les Arcs

What are the best bits about spending Christmas in the mountains?

1. Spending on Christmas day on the top of the mountain cannot be beaten!

2. The mood; everyone is really excited for Christmas which is then amplified by everyone being on holiday and the general excitement of being in a ski resort!

2. Snow, doesn’t get more Christmassy than that.

Were there any additional celebrations in resort?

I’m not sure whether I’m too old to say that Santa was still a highlight…?!

How does Christmas on the slopes compare to Christmas in the UK?

It’s difficult to compare a Christmas at home with a Christmas overseas only because it’s hard to capture the Christmas spirit in the sense that it exists in the UK. In the Alps I’d say that it’s a much more relaxed experience. It’s a lot more about the company you are with and the location you’re in. Personally I’d say it’s more about sharing the whole day on the mountain with family and friends, and then having the Christmas meal cooked for you. It’s a different kind of celebration, less materialistic, and it’s a lot less stressful for some than at home!

Which is your favourite festive location?

Tignes

What are the best bits about spending Christmas  in the mountains?

1. Snow!!!

2. Skiing – it goes without saying but it’s even better when you’re whizzing past Santa and his motley crew of reindeer from the chalet next door.

3. And the atmosphere. Everyone is geared up to celebrate together and that doesn’t simply last for the day, that lasts all week!

What’s your favourite memory from Christmas overseas?

It has to be the Christmas meal with friends which leads to a great Christmas fuelled night out! Oh, and on Christmas Eve there was also a great festive acrobat show in the centre of the resort which, whilst it was a little unorthodox, was a really good show!

Adam

Which is your favourite location over the festive period?

Verbier

What are the best bits about spending Christmas in the mountains?

1. The festive atmosphere is SO different to home, but in a really great way!

2. The cool events and firework displays put on by the resort. The fireworks and carol singing in Verbier were really amazing and you couldn’t help but get caught up in them.

3. The heavy amounts of (in my case) Swiss food around!

What’s your favourite memory of Christmas/New Year overseas?

Just doing something different to the same old same old Christmas’ at home and seeing how another country celebrate the festive period! Would I do it again? Absolutely.
